wait wow,
I would actually make a joke about "salberto alazar" but Mike smith, wow.
He picked up a hot case but it looks like Mike will be coaching an Olympic medalist.
Best of luck Rupp.
Wow, this is a surprise.
I doubt that Rupp would make a move like this if there was any chance he's questionable for the Trials.
YES!! HUGE NEWS!! Mike Smith has awesome coaching results and now we’ll see what he can do with world class talent. Who are the fastest high school recruits Smith has worked with?
However this does make me wonder if Ed Eyestone might have been a better choice for OT Natty ‘Thon given his experience.
It has been a very long time since I rooted for Galen. Surprised to say that after reading the RW Q&A with Smith, I am rooting for him now.
Great news. I like it as it's a new perspective and fresh ideas.
On the one hand, I'm surprised by this simply because NAU is an adidas school, they don't have a Nike contract. But it's not like NAU is a basketball or football power.
That being said, on the other hand, I guess I should be surprised as we had heard that when the Oregon xc job came open, Salazar lobbied hard to get Smith to take over as their replacement.
I guess I'm more surprised by the fact that I'm not sure if Mike Smith has ever coached or run a marathon in his life. Anyone know? Correction. What was I tthinking? He was an OT marathon qualifier.

It says he ran the 2007 Olympic Trails Marathon.
It should also be noted that a poster in another thread posted that Smith was coaching him yesterday.
It's a smart move for Smith. Lots of upside, little downside.
1) He could have a lucrative side business coaching pros in Flagstaff .
2) It raises his profile in recruiting.
3) It gets him in the good graces of Nike.
If Rupp flames out, people won't blame him. They'll blame the injury or assume he was on androgel under Salazar and free of it now.
I guess the negative is if he corresponds with Salazar he ends up banned himself? That would be the hardest thing. If I was a coach,I'd want to talk to the previous coach and talk to him about what did and didnt' work. Is that even allowed?
Did he move to flagstaff to train?

The fact that NAU is an adidas school is irrelevant. Rupp isn't running for NAU. He's running under Mike Smith, who as far as we know, is free to coach any athlete he wants on his own, regardless of who that athlete is sponsored by.
Add to the weirdness is that Smith and Ben Rosario (who took some digs at NOP) seem to be good friends.
I am pretty surprised by this.
Huge news. This is breath of fresh air. Mike Smith is such a straight shooter and amazing coach, I hope Rupp launches to the next level with him.
Hi Rachel Schneider!
I like this development all around. Could be good for Rupps reputation (I actually believe he is clean) and even the change in training could be good, though it would be pretty surprising for him to jump another level.
We've mostly all agreed that Rupp is capable of 204 and I doubt that will change to 202 because of this change.
Wetmore coaches Jenny Simpson, a new balance athlete. He also coached Emma Coburn, another new balance athlete. Colorado is a Nike school. Don't think this is an uncommon occurrence, whatsoever.

Galen is obviously a doper.
Why do we pretend he’s not? This guy went from not winning an NCAA title to winning 7 in one year. You can basically see that’s where they started with the drugs.
Deer morons of LR: posting something over and over again doesn't strengthen your argument.

I’m curious about this as well.
On a different note: Great heads up PR move by Rupp. I wonder how much that was considered. I assume more than zero.

Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
