Ayele Abshero should win. Best time of 2.04.23 in winning Dubai dates back to 2012 but still is competitive (only29) where he is entered. Second last April in Hamburg is testament to that. Was third in London 2013 then 4th there the next year.

hit the showers, kid
Amane Beriso, if back near her best, wins: no question. When she made her debut in Dubai 2016 and was second in 2.20.48; at that time she was the fifth fastest debutant ever.

Beriso is 28yo and ranked 192 from her disappointing 2018 6th in Toronto in 2.28.56. That 15 months ago was her last recorded result. Has another impressive result in her kit bag with a second behind current top tenner Jemeli in Prague in 2017 in 2.22.15.
I think Abera Kuma will finish second here if he is in town, but I think the lure of the quicker run gets him to Dubai with his sister. I will move on to the next athlete instead.

Daniel Kibet is that man, 23yo and ranked 48. PB of 2.06.49 for fifth in Seville last year. Won Istanbul in November and no wonder he had a DNF five weeks later in Honolulu, out between 10 and 15k. Hopefully is refreshed and ready this time.

In Honolulu was in a group of 8 under 30 min for 10k and after he pulled out that group whittled down to five by halfway in 63.40 but none could stay near Titus Ekiru.
Last year’s winning lady should be runner-up this year. Worknesh Alemu is 29yo and ranked 45. Won in 2.24.42 here last year. Was 1.03 faster in Amsterdam in Oct but 6th, 3.20 behind all the first five including two debutants. Was still with them all at 30k in under 100 min, after halfway in 70.01. Also a third marathon under 2.27.40 last year after 12th in 2018 in 2.26.50 in an insanely deep Frankfurt.

I was wrong, he is off the last there so I will put him third here. 29yo and ranked 81. Second Ottawa last May in 2.08.14 then sixth in Toronto in Oct in 2.09.14. Best in Rotterdam 2018: second in 2.05.50. Beat his prev best by just the 6 seconds: third in Berlin 2014.

Should say ‘off the list’
Third woman might be Fetale Dejene, born 98 and ranked 111. Best time at Madrid in April of 2.27.06 for second then ninth in Ljubljana in October, 2.28.41. On that day Dejene was halfway in 72.05 and passed a tiring and disappointing Godfay in the last two km. World Athletics website has no previous records.
Last year’s winner could be fourth this year. Cosmas Lagat is 29yo and ranked 97. His time here last jan was 2.09.15, 1.01 off his PB set in Seville with what was then a CR in 2016.
Next woman may be surely the only elite athlete to run marathons on five continents last year. North America and Antartica are the only land masses she didn’t compete on. Who?

That is Rodah Jepkorir, born 91 and ranked 69. Three of those attempts at this classic distance were sub 2.28, quickest was in winning Buenos Aires in 2.25.46.
Fifth to finish might be Dawit Wolde, 28yo and ranked 24. Last May in Prague took 3.46 off his previous best by finishing in 2.06.18. Then in October was second in Frankfurt in 2.07.10. Three performances like that within twelve months puts him in the upper echelon of distance runners.
Fifth lady could be Sheila Jerotich, 30yo and ranked 111. Won Warsaw this last April in a CR 2.26.06. Previous year was fourth in the Comm Games just down the road an hour from where I live in 2.36.19; seconds in Kosice in 2.29.40 and Honolulu when 5.47 behind V. Kiplagat.

That 2018 Frankfurt field is only rivalled in history by Dubai 2015 and a couple of London’s.
Next to cross the line may be Birhanu Teshome, born 96 and ranked 172. Was eighth in Dubai last year in 2.08.20 and last October was seventh in Lisbon in 2.09.29. His tenth the year before in Paris in 2.09.59 was one of three times under 2.10.30 in 2018.
