Just saw that Cain had a 235.8 PR in the 1K. Fast!

That's a terrible result. I hope she was only "racing" it as a workout to get enough races to be eligible for state.
What do you mean? It's two seconds off her PB and she kind of got boxed in at the start and had to run around girls with probably cost her 2 seconds
I mean it's not like an incredible results or anything but it's a good effort
I think her endurance has improved so if she can keep her speed where it is it might set up her for some modest gains at 3K 5K.
Realistically she's got to look to stay healthy and make some small improvements. It takes time girls progress different than guys
I think its safe to say that Tuohy is just using these first few meets as a warm up to the indoor season. 600m and 1k are not distances she will focus on going forward. These are good times, but its really irrelevant.
Maybe we will get to see her do the 1500 and/or mile races - her focus is going to be on the 5k with the intent on qualifying for the Oly trials but I guess those aren't until June, so likely they wont do a hard push on the 5k for a bit yet.
Be interesting to see the path her and her coaches go for.
Cain ran 2:35. Tuohy's pace is 20 seconds slower for a mile. This can't be good.

I agree. Her xc season ended mid december. She probably did nothing resembling track work until after xmas. This is 10 days later. She won't get much faster at these distances, but she will get in gear for clicking off 70 second 400s. I bet her only serious mile effort will be in a dmr.

Hasay was slower than Cain speed-wise. Did that turn out to be bad? I don't understand why people here are so obsessed with sprint and middle-distance speed for runners who are clearly aerobic monsters with an insanely high % of ST fibers.
Also Tuohy was injured last summer, so she was likely focused on XC and not speed development.
Tuohy is also doing sustainable training and not heavily focused on speed work yet. Once she does (in college, when mature) she will also get close to the 2 flat that Cain ran. Klosterhalfen also wasn't setting the world on fire with her 800m times in HS but then got faster and faster and eventually broke 2 minutes. Her progression:
15 years 2:13.66 Mönchengladbach (GER) 20.07.2012
16 years 2:07.52 Rostock (GER) 27.07.2013
17 years 2:07.15 Rehlingen (GER) 09.06.2014
18 years 2:06.42 Zeven (GER) 24.05.2015
19 years 2:01.55 Leverkusen (GER) 08.07.2016
20 years 1:59.65 Pfungstadt (GER) 03.06.2017
Tuohy is only 17 right now, big improvements are still to come (and once again - she was focused on aerobic development until now, she has plenty of improvement left anaerobically).
Relax kids, Cain was a speed based distance runner, strong at 400m and already world class as a high school senior at 800 - 2min and 1500 4min. Tuohy's track times are competitive with Cain at the mile and 2 mile, but she only has a real advantage at XC, 5k and beyond.
I really enjoyed the 600m yesterday as Tuohy ran into 3 promising speed merchant distance runners in Gorriaran from Rhode Island, Mozine from Maryland and Dineen from hometown Staten Island. All 3 of them have 56 second 400m speed, and then run 2:10 for 800, 5min for the mile. They will all beat Touhy in a sprint, it's a dead heat at 800m (would be a great race) and Tuohy gets them starting at the 1k.
Mozine is only a junior, and Gorriaran a freshman. They both pre dikt to be in the national 800m picture for the next couple of years.
It was great to see that this little early season meet drew some nice regional talent. I think it's awesome that Tuohy runs these shorter, faster races.
Is it just me, or does anyone else find it creepy that grown @$$ men are critiquing a 17yo high school girl?

oh look, our resident Tuohy hater is back....what a moronic comment.
Yes, it would be great if she continued to improve on her current PBs
1000m 2:47.8i (2017)
1500m 4:14.4 (2018)
Mile 4:33.8 (2018)
3000m 9:01i (2019)
2 mile 9:51i (2019)
5000m 15:37i (2018)
I think that she has greatest chance to improve on the 5000m
Cain was very strong in the 800-1500m ranges. Like you said, a speed based distance runner. Tuohy beat Cain's 3000m record. She has a shot at her 2 mile record, but she will need to do in a pro race the way Cain did. It's a strong record.
Tuohy is just getting track and speed work in early in the season. 600 m is a good speed distance.

Was she expected to win the 600? She's a distance runner and the 600 is still within range of a sprint distance. A great distance runner is able to maintain a fast pace over a long distance. The only question is whether she has a good kick for a distance runner, which I think she has.
Nah, whether she wins or not depends on who she is running against. She comes against a good 400 person and she is not going to win

I agree. It is INSANE that people on a running forum want to talk about the best distance runner in hs over the last few years. It is just so creepy.

Does anyone know what distance Mary Cain was primarily focused on when she first turned professional out of high school
She obviously had grade 800m 1 mile and 2-mile times
What were they primarily targeting as her main events
In retrospect should she have focused on becoming an 800-meter Runner
And I see now she's running a lot of distance races like Four Mile Road races. Isn't she actually better at shorter distances
agree and I said as much early on...she was an 800m runner.
remember she was still a high school kid, so she like to run everything...
Al Sal had her focussed on the 1500 and 3000. She made a world championship final in the 1500, and she won the U20 worlds in the 3000.
Several times she ran under 2:00 for 800, and she even ran a 15:4XX something 5k on the track. I'm not sure whether the latter was to get the high school record, or to get a qualifying time for the USATF 5000. She even ran her last NXN, when she was with NOP.
I'd say 800/1500 was her sweet spot, but there may have been some thinking that ultimately 5k might work for her as well, with a really strong close.
Uuuhhhhh..... just you!
She's almost 18 and this is a website discussing running
People talk about Chess prodigies at a much younger age
The Williams sisters were big news in tennis at a much younger age
If you got some Hang-Ups about life you should probably try to deal with them!
The girl who won the 600 look really good. She looks like she was just hitting another gear at the Finish would have pulled a fast 800
She looks like she has real potential to be a strong 800-meter Runner. Tuohy kind of shut it down in the 600

Is that considered fast?
That's just a 2:14 800m + a 35 200m.
Yeah, this wouldn't be anything special if we were in the middle of the track season. This is what you'd expect from a 4:40 - 4:45 miler. However, given she has just come off of XC training, it's indicative that she is on track to go low 4:30s again and set some PRs with a little speed training. Her indoor PR for the 1k isn't much faster than this.
Not competitive at all with Cain over the 1500. Cain was a full 10 seconds faster than Tuohy at the same age. 4:04 to 4:14. That's a huge amount. Tuohy's not a miler. She's a long distance runner. Very similar to Hasay.
