In college I had this 8am jogging class and my track coach was the professor, which was great because he usually just let me run easy to get my mileage in. Or do speed workouts under his watch.
I had just run a meet that week and we had a 1.5 mile fitness run on our indoor track for class. I figured I’d run 6-minute mile pace, but right before the start he looked at me and said, “you’d better be under 7-minutes for this thing.”
I was a 400-800m guy in high school with a 4:26 mile pb. Never broke 10:10 in the two mile and ran 16:19 in XC. I wasn’t even sure what the pace was to run 1.5 miles under 7 minutes at first without doing some math the first lap.
But I ended up running 6:49. I ran very afraid and fortunately my body felt good. One of my favorite pbs from college actually.
I always ran best when my coach told me what time to run versus straight competing, aside from 4x400’s
