Skip to 15:00 to see the run. Dude has nice stride and I agree his time is good for a big guy his size.

I wonder how many people give a thought to the fact that U.S. Navy began in October, 1775. U.S.M.C. began, November, 1775. George Washington did not become President of U.S. until April 30th, 1789.
U.S. Navy & U.S.Marines were not exactly British and not exactly U.S. from 1775 to 1789.
U.S.M.C. were intended to fulfill U.S.Navy's landing mission.
Nations of the world were on gold standard then. Gold was moving all around the world on ships. Pirates knew there was a gold standard.
U.S.M.C. were intended to fight pirates on the seas and in their coastal encampments.
Se.A.L.s have been encroaching on U.S.M.C.'s mission since WW2. There was talk post WW2 if U.S.M.C. were necessary.
Do not be surprised when you discover men in U.S.M.C. can do anything on land that a Se.A.L. can do. In water, that is different.
these guys are all like 190-210 pounds...
Imagine how well we'd fair if we strapped on a backpack and through a 25-45 pound plate in! Not a perfect metaphor but it gets the point across.
9:10 is very impressive for heavy dudes that don't spend all of their free time trying to improve their running. Kudos!

This must be why pirates who could swim always escaped. Now the Seals can swim after them and catch them.

Know this:
Gunnery Sergeant Carlos Hathcock will always be #1
Chief Petty Officer Chris Kyle can be #2

They have to do pullups and bodyweight work, and one of the tests is a waist measurement. They are not that huge.
9:10 for 6 laps is not fast. People in other athletic events are often amazingly slow, particularly if they focus on strength and explosive power.
I doubt they weigh even 190 unless they are tall, definitely not 200+. Someone with talent and some training would run 7:xx even at 180lbs.
Umm, it's clear that the guy in the video is certainly extremely close to the 190 pound marker. He looks twice as big as your typical skilled distance runner. And muscle is heavier than fat so you can't rely on waist measurements alone.

A] His side stroke was horrible. Although the presenter said it was his first time doing it that day he was wrong. Side stroke is part of the swim qualification in boot camp for Marines. That said, it's a stroke that has each arm doing a different motion and timing those movements with the scissors kick takes some work. If you get that stroke right there's a built in glide portion to it and it's very efficient.
B] Was this some sort of funky track where lane 4 is 400m? If not his time was better than 9:10. Also why didn't the dude conducting the test not get that white banner out of the runners way. Not that I think that having to leap over the banner 6 times affected his time but it was annoying and a trip hazard.
C] It wasn't a "very quick time" in terms of Marine Corps PFT scoring. A 9:10 average pace for 1.5 miles isn't fast enough to get you under 18 minutes for 3 miles to max the run portion of the PFT.
D] The dude is pretty short (in terms of general population although not in terms of elite distance runners) so hard to gauge his weight but I don't think 180 is beyond reason.
The host guy says in another video that he's 6'3 242.
While he's definitely taller and bigger than the other guy, I don't think it's out of the question that he's pushing 200.
Definitely a respectable performance.
Twinks on this site like to pretend their fast times are anything but the result of running 100 mile weeks and weighing 95 lbs.

Imagine living in such a bubble that you think twink is an insult in 2019
XD
I wish I could run 100 mpw and not get hurt. I know this is a troll but it's super impressive to me.
How many high school girls could run sub-9:00 for a 1.5 mile run?
A bunch.
How many 50-60 yr old dudes can run that fast?
A bunch.

"A bunch"? Umm, I think not. Relatively speaking, not a bunch. I'd say maybe the top 50 female distance runners in each state.

Uh, it definitely is.

I'll admit i don't keep up with the distance scene outside of New YOrk State, but here, I'd say there are more than 500 girls that could hit that time.
.... with times, I agree. It's not fast. These guys (us) are not trying to just run a fast time. It's an overall fitness. Just like the Army, the run is your second to last event before the pull ups. You would have to have completed the push ups and sit ups, then the run with no warm up prior. With the new test, we do the deadlift, powerball throw, t or y hand release push ups, sprint-drag-carry, 2 miles run, and finally, the leg tug. Please, let me see how your 500 plus high school girls will do when exposed to the same situation. Just saying. One more thing, military personnel are training not only for the run but everything else depending on their military specialty. And by the way, I am a 3 times NCAA Division 1 All American, low 28s in 10,000m and I still like to run but with focus on other military training, I am happy to run my 10:30s for my 2 miles APFT or ACFT
Jeffy, why are you bringing up high school girls when talking about a military fitness test. Kind of an emotional response.
I brought up 500 high school girls in ny state in response to a guy who said there were 50 in each state who could run such a time.
Nobody is downgrading anything from that video. IN fact, quite the opposite.
I take it back. there are a couple idiots here...

You may be right. But I'm speaking about Florida/Georgia area. Not particularly strong in XC. Any girl getting under 19:00 for 5K is usually a lock to finish top 50 in the state. That's roughly the ability needed to get under 9:00 for 1.5 miles.
