In a little over a month, it will have been THREE YEARS since anyone has gone under 27:00 in the 10,000????????
I looked at my points performance book last night. Both the 10k mark, and the 200m were the highest ranked marks. 19.3/26:22 came out to about 7:17 for 3k (ouch), and 9.52 for 100m.
Mike
And he did this on Whopper, Fries, and soft drink.
Ogre- After meeting Komen I did a google search on him. Duncan MacKay a British Journalist, who writes about the KIM group in London, wrote an interesting article about him you should read. Also, I learned he made $400,000 in one month on the Grand Prix Circuit. $250,000 for winning the overall IAAF Grand Prix title jackpot prize. I'm assuming those are not given to drug cheats.
Not saying Komen was guilty but why on Gods green earth do you think because he won IAAF money he MUST be clean - please wake up and smell the coffee.
Also 19.32 maybe one helluva time - but run by a clean athlete? I really don't think so......
randymayes,
Glad to hear Komen is doing well and appears to be financially secure. Does he give any reason as to why he is not putting up the times he used to? His 3k certainly ranks as one of the best, if not the best record of all time. It has been pointed out that El G was relatively close, but keep in mind El G is also the best middle distance runner of all time.
What was MJ's 2nd 100m when he ran 19.32. That is unbelievable.
I can't waite until somebody runs a sub 2 hour marathon. 4:34 pace!!!
Also, a sub 1:40 800 will be amazing.
Sammy,I am not defending Komen. I just find it hard to believe that someone posting the times he did was not tested. I specifically asked him what was different after his record breaking streak. He replied " Sometimes your training is good and sometimes it is not." By that I interpret from our conversation he meant Moses Kiptanui and the Kenyan Federation actually set goals for him (12:40 5000m). He worked hard and and got it done. He still has the physical talent, but the mental mindset has changed. He has no clear goals for running. He had 5 world records and running is no longer the sole focus of his life. I have no reason to believe that KIM's group or Kalenjin's are cheats. Nothing personal, but you being negative is of no consequence to me. In my books he is the man. You are negative Sammy. Your coffee argument is less than convincing.
Note that Geb's 26:22 is worth a 1:38 800m, as well as 2:02+ marathon
Randy,
I'm loathed to get into an argument here because I'm certainly not casting aspersions upon Komen - I don't have any knowledge whatsoever about his training etc. and am not for one second implying I think he was taking drugs....HOWEVER.....your assumption that because he won money from the IAAF he must have been tested therefore he MUST have been clean is so wide of the mark it borders on naivity. Leaving Komen aside for one second and pretend we're talking generally here - Ben Johnson - do you think he was ever tested by the IAAF ? Of course he was - now were his tests rigged to protect IAAF and increase public awareness of the sport or was he just using good masking agents - either way he "passed" test when it was quite clear he was as dirty as sin.
More recently - Mohamed Mourhit - passed tests all the way along but now busted due to a new EPO test - for goodness sake look at all the East Germans women who have all know grown balls and beards such was their drug use - guess what they all passed too!
Even aside from the drug testing - look at Evangelisti the Italian long jumper in 1987 World Champs - the IAAF blatently rigged the measuring of his jumps to make him a medalist to appease the local crowd - this is /was corruption from the very top of the IAAF -
Randy - I'm sure you can't really be as green as to think that because an athlete won IAAF money and pissed in a cup and nothing subsequently happened that this automatically means he has to be completely clean?
Sammy
Explain to me again how a 26:22 is worth a 1:38, and 2:02? Are you using one of those freakin' equivalency calculators? Or is this an estimation / assertion from your point of view.. a vintage McManus special?
I suppose Kouros' 24 hour run record of 186+ miles (just under 7:45pace for 24hrs) is "worth" a 9.5 100meter dash?
Sammy. I will agree that it is not beyond comprehension that he took some type of performance enhancement. Based on facts and not imagination, where is any evidence? Kim's group is clean. Kalenjin's are clean. Eastern Europeans and sprinters seem to have a track record and different mentality towards performance enhancement and are willing to gamble. You are basically self appointing yourself like Al Sharpton and putting Komen on the defense because you have negative beliefs. How is that any different that me accusing you of stealing your computer from an old folks home after punching an old lady in the head? Should you have to prove to me you did not? Or, should I provide evidence that you stold it. Until you prove otherwise I will regard you as a thief.
I'm not even going to try and argue with that logic - punching old folk, Al Sharpton, stealing computers - talk about going out on a tangent!........anyway please re-read this thread and point out where I claimed Komen was taking drugs - I was at pains to state that I wasn't accusing him merely questioning your flawed logic that because he won IAAF money he must be clean
By the way I'd prefer if you didn't liken me to Al Sharpton thank you very much.
Sammy
MJ's official splits were 10.12/9.20.
Sammy, It was not you I was addressing, but Ogre. Sorry. Please accept my apology. I'm am saying how could Komen run those times at so many meets on the circuit and not be tested if warranted. If those officials were skeptical they had plenty of chances to test him. Otherwise they did not care or there was collusion.
Conversion King...You are correct in your comments. It is very difficult to predict time at the elite level across the board. The is especially the case as times constantly get faster and faster. There are a couple performance charts that guesstimate performance. This is just a guesstimate...nothing more, but I thought it was worth including in this thread. I actually thought the 3k record was the highest mark...
Mike
Daniel Komen won junior worlds in both the 5000m and the 10000m in 1994. Guess it was there he first made himself a name.
7.20 is tough to beat, but J. Gray is still the king. Credit to the frontrunning master.
Daniel
it does seem that komen is down and out and has been for some time. it's true that after he ran those amazing times he had to go home to kenya to help out his family and left the wife and kid in england. whether this took its toll on his running, i don't know.
as for the 7.20. wow i think it's one of the best. will it be broken soon i don't know. el g did run 7.23 as already stated but he was all over the shop with his style in the last 1km. he looked really bad. having said that if he could run a few longer races he may do it. anyone else, no way.
but because el g did run close it is possible. as for the 200 wr going any time soon... no chance
didnt that russian women win the GL last year, and they caught her using EPO.
