Hey guys. I’m a 15:40 5K CC runner looking to get a scholly at a large D1. I’m having a hard time getting any coaches biting on my times. Any suggestions?

Run close to 9:00 in outdoor. Maybe do a road 5k after track to get closer to 15.
15:40xc is not enough for much money anywhere competitive.
Aim lower. D2, NAIA, lower D1. Act enthusiastic for the coach.
15:40 is average for a D1 freshman. I'm not downplaying it at all, still about a minute faster than me, but you are going to want some range too. You need to be top in state to get scholarships exclusively from XC. Coaches care a lot more about track times anyways as they are more concrete.
Try getting a strong PR in the shorter distances like the 800. (think sub 2) This will show coaches they can put you in any middle distance event and you'll place at least averagely.
Heres why I say this:
I easily consider my teammate to be a better runner than me. He has ran 15:07 and finished top 7 at state. He was also only a couple spots off of going to NXN. Heres the kicker. He hasn't broken 4:45 in the mile and his PR in the 800 is 2:12. He has only gotten one WALK ON offer out of the 10+ colleges he has talked to, and a small scholarship offer to the same D2 school I have. He would be scoring in XC for most of these colleges, yet no offer.
I on the other hand have a PR of 16:37 for XC, only raced varsity for like half of the races. The difference is I have a 51 400 1:56.5 800 and a 4:29 mile. I don't consider any of those PRs better than a 15 minute 5K, but I've been given preferred walk on's from 3 D1s in my state, a reasonably small offer from another D1 in my state, and a 50% at a cruddy D2 in my state. There are only 6 Schools with mens running programs in my state.
Get a wider range of PRs, and ask coaches what they are looking for as far as walk-ons/scholarships go.
They don't give scholarships to kids who cannot use the proper term.
So far great advice. I’ll be aiming high this track season for low 9:00s and sub 4:15. Sounds like I’ll want to drop my 800 time as well. I’ll get on the roads this summer. I really want this! I think running D1 would be so great.
Sorry for my terminology of Scholly v. Scholarship. I’ll try to use the latter from now on as don’t want that to be a barrier for me.
You need to move to the UK. Then US coaches will start showing interest.
If you are a junior, coaches aren't talking to you yet. If a senior, there won't be any scholarships left during track.
Do you specifically want a financial scholarship or is that short hand for “I want to earn a roster spot on a D1 team”?
If an athlete’s parents are paying for school why would an athletic scholarship matter to the athlete? You’d be better off not being bound by the requirements of a scholarship.
Typical liberal mindset. "Someone else is paying so I don't care." Why wouldn't you try to save your parents $100k if you can?

The biggest mistake you’re making is looking at just “large” D1 schools. This has to be by far the worst mistake most runners make and end up on the portal. Look at great schools that are mid major D1s athletically. For example, if you lived in South Carolina or wanted to go to college in that state, you would do yourself a huge favor going to Furman over South Carolina. Big school doesn’t mean the best. That’s like saying oh going to Walmart’s food is better than Whole Foods.
Except that Furman is more expensive and faster than South Carolina.
1. What did you place at State and Foot Locker?
2. What is your 3200m time?

3200 time means much more than a time on a short CC course.
9:15 or faster to get any interest from large D1 schools.
You aren't guaranteed a lot of money unless you get under 9:00.
Betting he ran 9:50 but won't believe his XC course is short.

No one mentioned politics but shouldn’t Baron Trump expect his dad to pay for college?
My point is that athletes use scholarship to mean both money and earn a roster spot. There are two pursuits
1. You could earn a spot at Oregon for example and expect not to get a full scholarship.
2. If money is what you really want you could go to a DII school and get a full ride.
I ran 9:28 for a deuce last year. I’m planning to bring it down below 9:15, hopefully 9:10 this Spring. Anyway I’d be looking for a monetary scholarship if possible, does not need to be a full though.
You are a junior or senior? If a senior, expect no money. If a junior and you run 9:15, you may get books at a decent school.
I’m currently a junior. Won’t graduate until 2021 and really looking to improve over the next year and a half. Looking to make footlocker or NXN and be top three in IL state meet
I coach a kid who qualified for NXN this year who is walking onto an average P5 program. Track time is only 9:20 from junior year though. You really need to run 9:10 as a junior to get coaches excited at all. 9:20 as a junior will probably get you to walk-on at some average programs. Bradley will give you a small scholarship for 9:20 as a junior but the starting price is higher than some other schools so you won't be any further ahead. Illinois has many D1 state schools.

Not too interested in going to Bradley. If I had to go smaller D1 in Illinois I think I’d try DePaul or Loyola but really want that big time college experience. Maybe I could get a slot at Iowa, Nebraska, or Illinois. I want this and I’m going for 9:10 this year if not faster. I think I can do it and my workouts this winter are going amazing. I’m going to get myself a scholarship!
