Yikes. I love the Harry Potter franchise (books and movies). This surprises me coming from Rowling. She presents as such a kind, thoughtful person. I wouldn't think that referencing someone as their preferred/expressed gender would be such a hang up for her.

I find it odd that some people refuse to make reference to someone by that person's preferred gender. They aren't asking you to change your beliefs or your viewpoints, just one little term that is easy for you to change and can be very meaningful and empowering to that person.

Why would you not want to make someone else happy by doing something so easy?

I refer to people by the pronoun associated with their sex, not their gender.

Several posts on this thread come from a single person using different handles (the post I'm quoting included), but the people condemning Rowling are deranged.

This is the woman who:

- Routinely denounces Trump

- Supports the Labour Party

- Donated millions to the Labour Party

- Retroactively made Dumbledore gay for diversity purposes

- Retroactively made Hermoine ethnically ambiguous for diversity purposes (this one is explicitly for diversity, as crazed fans have directly pointed to multiple passages where Hermoine is quite literally described as white)

- Frequently denounces behavior of "fake" Liberal men

- Supports taking more and more Migrants into Britain

This is among a LONG list of extremely left viewpoints that Rowling routinely expresses. She does this so frequently that she has heavily alienated Conservatives as a whole.

Somehow, her fans find time to complain about things like:

- Dumbledore's gay status not being explicitly made to define him in a movie

- Casting Johnny Depp

- Not liking Corbyn (despite her continued support of the Labour party)

There are fans who have apparently read each of her 7 main books FOURTEEN times, but dislike her because they couldn't tell Dumbledore was gay in a movie.

Are these people stupid? This is a matter of denouncing someone who routinely campaigns for 99/100 of your beliefs and has done more than almost anyone else in the world for those beliefs, simply because she disagrees on the 100th. It makes NO sense.

I think that in a free society it is the responsibility of the trans person to execute the transition with skill and aplomb. In other words, be utterly convincing. I would have zero problem referring to Blair White as "she, her", but not so much Caitlyn Jenner, or certainly that bike-riding androgyne.

The individual at the center of the Maya Forsteter case is thoroughly poisonous, referring to "terfs" as "c**ts", shutting down any debate and throwing around the usual propaganda.

This is a huge cultural and policy issue and has a massive impact on the rights of hundreds of millions of women. It can't be done by stealth, through fear of speaking up, being labelled as terfs and losing jobs. It has to be done through thoughtful, reasoned, constructive debate.

I would like to thank JKR for trying to open a debate. Look at the poison she has received as a result.

This. Maybe in 100 years it’ll be possible, but as of now, it’s only external aesthetics. I think it’s unfair to choose to be a woman only selectively. Menstruation is just one thing that comes to mind that’s ignored.
