I can't remember a women's HS class even close to this one--you run under 17 min at FL and you get 3rd!

Great race for Cain. She was 1 second behind Claire Green who has run 16:53 for 5k this year. On the right day, Cain could surely break 17min for 5k.
Cain is a sub 2 min 800m runner, and a 1500m runner by nature. Tuohy et al. are slower, longer types. XC will always be tougher for her. Shows Cain is getting decent fitness back at least.
Are you two aware that she ran a 21:20 for 4 miles in Central Park in May? According to McMillan, a 21:50 4 miler is equivalent to 16:48 for 5000. So basically she's in the same shape she was in May. She was decently fit then and decently fit now.
This actually made a lot of sense. She started her XC season late with a plan to peak right now for NXN and this USATF race. The sloppy conditions in Portland didn't really let her have a great performance, so it was good for her to use this race to actually get a really good result out of her current fitness.
Kind of like the NCAA athletes who use their NCAA fitness to run great times at BU 3k/5k (get an NCAA indoor qualifying mark out of the way) and then go to holiday break.
The real intriguing question is how does Tuohy set up her schedule over the next 6 months and toward what goals? Will she run the high school season, will she just run a pro schedule, will she try to hit the Olympic Trials standard in something, which event? What college will she choose, how does that impact these plans? Will she run USATF XC in Jan?
Will enjoy watching how this all plays out and wishing her all the best!

it's off season!
why not just be a kid for a minute?
Agreed. Absolutely pointless for Tuohy to be racing two big meets in 7 days at the end of a long XC season. Starliper and Ewert were dumb to race again this weekend. These athletes are going to be toast in a couple years, if not sooner.

Lol
Are you agreeing with yourself, or is there really one other troll that agrees with you? You should get a room together. Oh wait, you already have space under a bridge.
One of the greatest high school runners of all time should only challenge herself against comparable talent once per season, or a week isn't long enough for a17-year old to recover from a 5K?

There is no more meaningless meet in the country than USA Club Nationals in Cross Country for Tuohy to race as an individual. It is NOT a "pro" meet. There are no qualifying standards.
Last year she was saying she wanted to make the Olympic team. Olympic trials are in 6 months. This meet doesn't make sense when that's your goal. Maybe she gave up on the Olympic for this year.
we're only here once, just shoot for it

Back in the day a lot of people did XC races as part of their base training.

She ran 15:45 for 5k in HS. So basically she has regressed

Runner up to Aisling Cuffe by 4 seconds in brutal, muddy conditions! Unbelievable after her all out effort last week.
LRC add: In the team battle, the Hoka Aggies won with 73 points.

i didn't realize that an XC race where running stores put together teams was considered a "pro" race
Yes, but wrote:

Yes, that is something many of us are aware of
I cannot find any reference to Tuohy saying she was aiming to make the Olympic team for 2020. She said she wanted to qualify to run at the trials. That is a reasonable goal. I imagine it would be very exciting for her to run at a race with all those top US athletes, and run in traffic on the track. Good practice, and exciting.
Also, re USA Club Nationals, she ran a close race against Cuffe and some other very good athletes. I'm sure it was exciting for her. And she and her family did not have to fly across the country to do it. Seems like it was a good decision. She doesn't need to race just for your approval, or anyone else's.

Ironic screen name. She never said that she wanted to make the Olympic team. Her goal was to qualify for the trials. She needs to PR by 12 seconds to do that, so hardly an unreasonable goal for her to set for herself.
Seems like she had a great time, ran a great race, had fun, and all within about 1-2 hours of her house. It thought it was a fine end to the xc season.
Tuohy just flies on the track. She will now really be in her element for the last 6 months of HS. And yes, even though she has won three straight national championships in cross, I think the track is where she will continue to excel.
National Club XC Championships is not a pro race. There are pros competing but mostly not pros. There is no such thing as US pro cross country.

right?! I played in a pick up basketball game years ago with LA Laker Michael Cooper. So I played in a professional basketball game and scored some points!
I noticed in your FL recap, you said Tuohy chose to run USATF Club XC instead of Foot Locker. You know that's not really the case. She was not qualified for Foot Locker, so instead of sitting around the house on a Saturday, or going to Phillie to see the Army/Navy game, she chose to drive over to Bethlehem and try out the 6k XC distance against a strong field of adult amateurs and pros.
