When I was coaching, I was very much obsessed with ferritin. When I met with Salazar once at Nike, I realized he was as well. I didn't realize it's considered to be cheating by some.

Too much can kill you as it thickens the blood.....
even a small amount can constipate you......
you need blood tests to monitor. -
Iron is already found naturally in food.
The testing seems like an overreaction because of a few female athletes who were given bad advice from coaches. -
When I was in highschool I came home dehydrated once because it was a hot day and I didn't drink any water since the previous night. I felt so weak that I got a bottle of liquid iron and vitamin C from the fridge which was almost full(my pops used to take 10ml of it every day) and I drank the whole thing. It was the most refreshing thing in the world. I felt like I was walking on clouds made of Bekele for the next few days

It’s my understanding that this is common practice among the top-tier groups (NOP (former), BTC). Altitude camps as an excuse/rationalization for iron injections. Not a banned substance (method may need justification?), but stinks of being against the spirit of the sport.
I know people who had consistently low iron despite taking an oral supplement and had substantial boosts in hemoglobin after going to a injections.
And I think the practice was/is widespread in Japan HS, with a few cases causing hospitalization and getting them to act on it. -
Is that why nearly all japanese hs male can run a 29min 10,000?

This seems like it might be comparable to hydration testing for high school wrestlers cutting weight. Done as a measure to protect the welfare of children and to protect the liability of the entities that supervise and conduct the competitions (the schools and state governing bodies).

Bingo, it's cheaper to test everyone at the championship level, where abuse may be more likely, than it is to pay a civil suit or insurance claim for wrongful death or injury. -

What a load of tosh, your hemoglobin won't go any higher with extra iron unless you are deficient in it!
