Inadvertently didn't pay $4.00 EZPass toll in Delaware. Got bill for $91.50. How in the world is this legal? Options?

This happened to me in NYC...

I wrote letters to both the NY State office in Albany and they stopped harassing me. And i guess they dropped it.

But i thought it was unjust and criminal... I argued that there must be a CASH option. I dont want to start another account, with more passwords, etc...

But all in all this is the kind of criminal activity of 'late-stage capitalism'

Even more likely than someone showing up at your house: you get pulled over for some minor traffic infraction, the cop runs your name through his computer, and it comes back that you have this unpaid toll, which by now has become quite large due to penalties and interest. You go to jail until you pay it off.

That's good news. I hope they accept the appeal. The right decision is to forgive the fees for an out-of-state visitor.

There are much more important things for the state to go after like homelessness or the opioid crisis.

I used to be very familiar with the DelDOT E-ZPass operation. I even got to have a meeting with their top boss at their headquarters in Dover on a few occasions. I have a legally acquired (retired) E-ZPass sign in my residence.

The administration fee for missing a toll in Delaware is $25 per occurrence. What your friend has tacked on are court fees for not making the payment in a timely manner. When the civil courts get involved those extra fees come along it.

DelDOT would likely waive the penalties if you call them up and plead your case that it was a misunderstanding and offer to pay the toll that is due.

Penalty fees seem an annoyance but they are in place to discourage people from willingly blowing the tolls.

Southbound the lane separation are clearly marked E-ZPass only (left two lanes) and Cash (right two lanes) at 1 mile, 1/2 mile and 800 feet away. It is similarly marked at those intervals on the three lanes headed northbound with E-ZPass left lane, E-ZPass or Cash middle lane (fork) and Cash right lane.

You should have a transponder in your vehicle.

The one I recommend is the North Carolina QuickPass which works for tolls in the 19 states which accept E-ZPass, as well as at the Georgia PeachPass lanes in the Atlanta area and across Florida where Sunpass, E-Pass and Leeway are used.

No monthly fees with Quickpass either and it is portable between vehicles (e.g. you can take with you in a rental car).

I don't know where you're from, but I work for an engineering company that specializes in Open Road Tolling. We work with EZ pass.

In our system, people without violations get their bill in the mail. This is in New York.

Call them. If you have a valid EZPass, they will just charge you the toll owed. Thanks

There is plenty of case law, they would have to justify the 87.50 in administration etc. Obviously they cannot so you win if you are willing to take it further.

Rojo...although I agree with you that the fines are a joke, you guys probably make 10 times this amount PER-DAY just from google adsense ads here on letsrun. Pay it and get rid of it. If the general public understood why their name is written in ALL-CAPITALIZED-LETTERS on their drivers license and on these tickets themselves they'd be somewhat closer to the truth but most haven't a clue, respectfully. WHAT is being charged? A soul or a CORPORATION?...
