In December 2004 I ran at the first NXN (it was NTN back then, Nike Team Nationals) for The Woodlands, TX. First, realize that most xc courses in TX are flat and fast (big surprise). Heavy rains make for maybe 1 good muddy course per year, but other than that, running xc in TX is like running track, unless it's raining. The "hill" at the state meet is not a hill, more of a "long" incline. If you want to see a hill, go run the old Maryland state meet course (holly hell of a hill).
Going in to NXN we were ranked #2 or #3 behind York and maybe FM Manilus. We mentally prepared ourselves for a VERY muddy race, which it was, and at the end of the day we finished a disappointing 7th. WHY? Here's my take....
1. Long season - We started racing (all out, not tempo runs) in August.
2. We did 100% of workouts on the track, all year long. All tempo and pace runs (up to 8 miles) were done on the track. I never did a single workout on grass until leaving for college. All other mileage was done on extra wide concrete trails that run through the community.
3. State Championship comes first. The motto was to win the state meet first, then worry about NXN.
4. NXN was 4 weeks after the TX state meet. We got to NXN feeling flat as we had been racing since August.
It's just too bad NTN/NXN wasn't around just 1 year earlier. The Woodlands had a nasty top 8 guys (all under 9:29 for 2 miles).
