This story is crazy.
In Alaska a 5 year old and an 18 month were left home alone in a remote part of Alaska. The temps were -31 degrees F (-35c). The power went out in the home so older child carried the younger child to the neighbors home which was a half mile away.

Warming story! He should get some hot chocolate for his heroics.
And maybe some ice cream once he's gotten over the cold. -
What was his time?
-
I laughed way too hard at this.

The child was probably mad at the negligent mom, and did the whole thing on Pure Hate.

Sorry, but I'm going to have to call BS.
There isn't a 5 year-old in the world who could carry a 18 month-old for a half mile. Anyone who believes this story hasn't been around any 5 year-olds in quite some time. -

You have not been around 5 year olds lately. A 5 year old could easily carry an 18 month old for 800 meters. I bet this girl could.

I'm calling BS on this story. I've never seen an article about a 5 year old training in socks carrying a baby and then placing in a major marathon! If that were true, then there would be many 5 year olds training in Alaska in the winter in socks, and we'd be seeing many scientific articles about them, for example in Runner's World, and Renato Canova would be posting about it on here!

Yukon Flats? So he didn't have to cover any hills? That makes it easier. Only impressive thing is he didn't use cheaterflies.

It's possible if the 5-year-old was walking slowly down a small incline and took breaks.

Is it on Strava?

Good question actually, considering the life threatening conditions. Also risk of frostbite even though they made it.
I figure half a mile for a motivated 5 year old carrying a 22 lb 18 month old through harsh terrain could have taken 25 to 30 minutes. Take off 2 or 3 minutes with Vaporflys. -

My 5 year old nephew can definitely carry his 19 month old brother around. A half mile? Sure, but it would require breaks. An 18 month old is walking, so the 5 year old could set him down for breaks and the 18 month old might even have walked a bit of it himself.
Anyway, this story is really sad. When I read this story yesterday, I didn't get impressed by the 5 year old (not that I'm saying it isnt impressive, it is), I wasn't angry at the dead beat mom, I was just sad. I have a 16 month old, I can't imagine leaving him alone like this. The article says that they both suffered injuries from the cold, which I assume means frostbite. Any other parents here able to imagine allowing their baby to be at risk of frostbite or dying of hypothermia? This stuff gives me nightmares. -
Maybe he dragged him by the feet and then brushed the snow or dirt off him when they got to the neighbor so it would look like he carried him?

I love this kid for every human reason you think possible. He took a lot of initiative and maybe felt pressure of the 18month old crying in the dark.
The fact he had no shoes kills me inside. How cold those little feet must have been. Perhaps he was too concerned for the sibling crying and between that and the lack of working lights is what motivated him to act fast.
I dont care if my body was feigning for the next rush of meth, I could never give that priority over the well being of children I brought into this world. The woman should lose custody of the kids if they have relatives they can be with. -

Not defending anyone by ANY stretch of the imagination, and I agree with basically everything you said, but as someone who has seen friends and family deal with addiction, I have a feeling you might not be able to relate to this -
Another vote for wittiest LRC post ever. Well done.
The username is the supreme sacrifice, and for that, you get a lot of respect. You had to know you had a gem, but didn't post under your registered name because did he look relaxed is just funnier. Very well done. -
Its not a half mile, the article estimates it at about a half mile. How many lay people do you know who can judge distance accurately? Most non runners think they've gone miles when its been maybe one. This is the equivalent of walking down the street in weather that is common in that area. Not impressed. The five year old was able to think rationally and carry his baby sibling through the cold down the street.
