That's a sensible move. She is a decent 5k runner and can improve her 10k PB. With dedicated specific training she improves her chances on making it. I wonder who finally convinced her? Did she had a revelation from Jesus?

1) It's total Vindication for LetsRun. I know Jonathan Gault, Steve Soprano and myself got some flak for saying she had a zero percent change of Olympic gold in the marathon.
2) The track trials are much more interesting now.

And they wonder why people think this place is a cesspool. Celebrating someone's failure is not a good look, they did the same thing to Sammy Watson and others. It's as if they are so hateful they root for people to fail just to make themselves look important. If I was a professional athlete, I would NEVER give LRC the time of day. I think all athletes, especially females should boycott LRC and never give them interviews. The fact that this illiterate twit thinks this is appropriate says a lot.

How did that work out for her?

I don't get why it's so fun to hate on someone's dreams/aspirations and then misfortune. Gwen is a fantastic triathlete and runner. Her sweet spot in running does seem to be the 5k/10k. The 1500 and marathon are both loaded. She's definitely a contender for the 5k or 10k team. Gonna be tough for Bowerman with Infeld and Hall also going for the 10k. If Huddle or Sisson doesn't make the marathon team, the 10k will be an even tougher team to make. This adds another fun story heading into this summer. I'm gonna choose to be excited for her.
Please specify where this "hat[ing] on" occurs.
Again, where is the hatred? Criticism is unequal to hatred and usually not an expression of hatred.
The problem is that she needs to try to hit the standard to even make the team, which would be a decently big PR for her. If she can stay healthy, she could go sub 32 again, but she has a while to go before becoming a contender for an Olympic team on the track.
She wouldn't stand a chance against Daniela Ryf

I agree and also- should only runners who have an actual shot at making the Olympic Team compete?
Maybe she just wants to run- she can run track, roads, the marathon, or the hammer throw for that all I care.
If it bothers you- move on to something else, son't click on her stories at all.
This entire “journey” makes me sad. The fact that one of the best women triathletes of all times has been desperately trying to get attention through this move, the outlandish goals, this YouTube channel. Her tone was off putting whether the fake enthusiasm is meant to sell this to others or sell this to herself it just all makes me sad. I wish her well but I I wish she didn’t have to pander like this to make a living and keep her name out there.
Ryf is human as this last Kona showed. Gwen has to paths, moving to long course or the one she chose. I think that she could have chosen long course with a different coach and a set up where she is not traveling the world for camps and races like the ITU circus. Ultimately it’s about getting paid to compete and she would have kept her same triathlon sponsors and probably gathered more with a move to the more popular long course IRONMAN races and championships.

Normally I hate your posts with a passion, but you are pretty spot on here. Definitely count me in on the Go Gwen Go team.
If her long term goals are still in the marathon then why run the 5 and 10 at the trials where she doesn't have a particularly good shot at making the team? If the primary goal is the Olympics, the path of least resistance is clearly still the triathlon (or is it somehow too late to qualify for that?). If the primary goal is running marathons, she still needs experience running marathons and running the marathon trials will give her that. I don't see how missing the team in a tactical 10000m does anything for her from either a running or marketing perspective. If she cares about the marathon, she should realize that there is life at the marathon distance outside of the Olympics. It's typically harder to win London anyway. There are going to be three dozen marathons people care about between these Olympic games and the next. Her best bet is not to obsess about the Olympics and simply work on whittling down her PR running two marathons a year.

Name an outspoken woman who dreams big that isn't crucified on here.
You just want Gwen to set her goals lower and shut up.
Name one runner (or anybody for that matter) who isn't crucified on here. Example - Sage Canaday. That guy actually posts on here, his goal is to run an OTQ, running a time he has actually run before, and he is constantly crucified. Are you saying that you believe that Sage is female and that's why he is crucified? Please explain?
Or better yet, just stop being an idiot.
Do you struggle with comprehension? Saying that outspoken women with big dreams are crucified here is not the same as saying that Sage is a woman because he is criticized on here. Go back to remedial everything.
As for an example of a runner who isn't attacked on here nearly as much as Gwen, I could list dozens. But let's start with Engels.

Worked out to an Olympic gold and a good life as far as I can tell.

Good for Gwen. Hopefully she realizes that she’s not designed for the full. Many of us are not. I am one.
After a couple of sub 16 5ks (a good time for a female), and a 4:35 Mile, I was never able to break 2:40 in the full. After 2 attempts (both between 2:41-2:43) I decided I did not enjoy it nor was it my forte.
Hopefully Gwen focuses her efforts on her strengths. Best wishes to her.
Right. Gwen made the mistake of thinking that because she's the best in the world at a multisport event that takes the better part of 2 hours, she could also be the best in the world at a pure running event that takes only a little longer. But she isn't built to be a marathoner. I'm pretty skeptical about her chances in track events too, but she has a better shot at the 5K/10K than the marathon.
I never broke 18 minutes for 5K and couldn't come remotely close to a 5-minute mile, but I ran a 2:43 marathon on an honest course. I was built to be a marathoner. You and Gwen weren't.

She was an Asics sponsored triathlete.
