As far as decline on the field those two take a backseat to Ray Chapman.
How about Pete Rose?
As for runners - David Mack comes to mind. I think he's doing jail time now?

Saw Bostock play a game at Angels stadium the last year of his life. Have a picture of him at home plate after a Grand Slam by Don Baylor. Nolan Ryan pitched that day against the Royals. Due to events not long afterwards, its Lymon I remember most from that day.
Sad ending but there was no decline prior to that.
Correction: David Mack did his time in jail; out now.
Valentino Rossi. This year no wins, just 2 podiums. I get that he still loves racing, but, he's just not the same rider anymore.

Salazar’s decline was sad, but he set the American Record at 5,000 and 10,000 in the months after the “Duel”. Very sad that this all happened before his 24th birthday.

Let's start a negative thread about the saddest decline of a professional athlete instead of a positive thread about professional athletes. I have no idea what kind of mental illness this reflects, but it starts with the founders.

None. Expressing the entire range of human emotions is healthy. Have you seen a therapist yet?

I found it difficult to watch Wheating's last 2-3 years. So much talent, but couldn't seem to get it right.
Three NCAA titles, two Olympic teams and a 3:30 1500m is certainly a good resume but I always felt Wheating underperformed his entire professional career. People have said this before but it stays true, he never had the personality nor dedication to reach his full potential. When he could no longer coast of talent like in HS/College he was chewed up by true world class athletes. His entire career post 2010 was a depressive decline. His qualification to London 2012 was clutch and impressive, but everything else was just sad.
Have you watched Dwight play this year? Putting in good minutes for a very good Laker team.

Please tell me you aren't serious. Dude is practically 50 and still a professional.

It is very negative of you to have a fake user name of Pathetic LRC

Jordan was still playing at a level warranting serious MVP discussion half-way through his final season.
But watch the video and learn.
No this is a very unhealthy expression and does reflect a mental illness.
MJ has ruined his rep by imploding an NBA team over and over in a league that is 15x better than when he was playing.
