In golf, nobody seems to say anything if players hang around for another ten or 15 years in a vain effort to win one more "major."
Tennis seems to be different. Borg actually quit at 25 the day he realized he was only the second best player in the world. Federer is fighting that trend even though he'll never be higher than the #3 player in the year again ... unless the top two guys get hurt, which, given their injury histories, is very possible. In the meantime, he's making tens of million of dollars a year.

I found it difficult to watch Wheating's last 2-3 years. So much talent, but couldn't seem to get it right.
the sad part was he ran a 3:30 at monaco, and just like ryan hall started thinking he was upper echelon talent....sorry dog but boston that year was fake and monaco is 2-3 seconds fake....so running 3:33's and feeling sh*tty about himself when he believed he was a legit 3:30 guy is what destroyed him.
ryan hall thought he was a legit 2:04 guy on a "tough" course, so he prob thought he was a 2:03 high guy say berlin...he wasnt, but he trained like he was and burnt himself out. prob the same thing with wheating.
"how come i cant do this workout im a 3:30 guy?"
i would say for real is
- german fernandez
-alan webb
-adam goucher...the tantrum to get into the 10k and then suck it up...yeah that was sad
-jim cultler....god he sucked hard beginning at the broncos, and the memes never stopped....anyone remember the broncos/chargers game where both him and phil rivers where crying on the sidelines? so pathetic haha
-AI.....bounced around so many times after carmello exiled him from denver and boy it was sad
-al davis....dude was sucking it up really bad...i see the same thing happening with jerry jones when he gets too old, and john elway is blowing it bad too
Two under-the-radar ones:
Missy Franklin is a good one. She was the best swimmer in the world at age 17. 4 years later she was barely in the Games. She did get some NCAA titles, but she was not the same swimmer.
I think Jonas Gray too is a good one. Gets his opportunity and destroys the Colts for the Patriots. Shows up late the next workday and never has a meaningful football moment again.

You can’t get much more pathetic than biting your opponent’s ear.

Favre. Ignored the obvious signs long enough that he actually had a flash of brilliance at the end, but all that did was draw out how long he took to bow out (and he still didn't do it gracefully, floating the idea that he'd re-enter the fray).
HM to Eli and TBD but Mo Farah could wind up in this convo.
Mo is almost required to continue. I can assure you that the wife of god is insanely expensive.

Most of the athlete's mentioned stuck around too long because they loved the game and couldn't walk away.
Jose was playing unaffiliated minor league ball because he needed the money.

Looking at Tom Brady last night, it occurred to me that lots of great ones have not known when to hang up
Brady? 325 yard 3 TD? Best record in the NFL? Best defense in the NFL? 5th best offense in the NFL?
Oh, I get it, Brady sucks?
I think I can speak for a large portion of the fans who really feel brady rubs us the wrong way. Here is the reason: goggle "brady screaming at the refs" You will get many hits. Google that about any other QB in history, and you won't get nearly as many. THIS is why many of us can not stand him. He whines. He destroyed his cell phone when asked about texts to equipment managers to deflate the balls. Yes, he is good. But, the fact that the NFL has changed the rules for the QB, basically making that position flag football, is largely because of him and him alone. He is the most famous, and he has to take the criticism with the fame. He is a whiner. Short and to the point. And, a proven cheater. And, add to that you are watching a game, and there he is Screaming at an NFL ref, and they do what? Nothing! They don't throw a flag, nothing. These are the reasons, many of us dislike him so much
Joe Montana, Bradshaw, Marino, Roethlisberger, Lamar Jackson... the list goes on. None of them, and I repeat, NONE of them are seen whining and complaining nearly as much as Brady. And Big ben got hit tons more than Brady, tone more. Does he scream at the refs? Nope. How about Eli, Peyton or Elway? Were they seen constantly yelling at refs?
So, come down off your high horse. Brady will go down as the greatest ever. But, the retired QB's don't respect him. Not at all. How could they?
