Looking at Tom Brady last night, it occurred to me that lots of great ones have not known when to hang up the spikes, gloves, balls, whatever.. Muhammed Ali and Mike Tyson come to mind. Who you got?

Jake “The Snake” Roberts. ??♂️
County fairs in front of 50 people. Got to pay the bills.

Brady? 325 yard 3 TD? Best record in the NFL? Best defense in the NFL? 5th best offense in the NFL?
Oh, I get it, Brady sucks?
When has he had below average QB rating before?
Steve Carlton bounced around with a couple of teams after getting released by the Phillies in 1986.
Feels like Carmelo is just hanging on hoping for a playoff chance.

How many of those yards and TDs came during meaningful minutes? Most came on their final two drives when the game was essentially out of reach against a prevent defense. They are hollow stats. Here is a more meaningful stat: The combined records of the teams they have beaten is 48-72. The combined record of the teams they have lost to is 18-6. They have benefitted greatly from one of the softest schedules in the league(on a neutral site, they are probably the 4th or 5th best team in the AFC). They will probably lose to KC next week. There is a possibility they lose to the Bills the week after (if that happens they end up a wild card team and will be out in the first round) and they will probably beat the Bengals and Dolphins. Their defense is not as good as advertised (they look mediocre against solid offenses) and their offense consists of Edelman and White catching passes (their tight ends and remaining receivers are poor, their line is mediocre at best and they cannot run the ball).
So their tight ends and receivers are poor, their line is mediocre and they dont have decent running game but Its Brady's fault? Maybe his decline is a result of his teammates.
Diego Maradona.
Actual footballer.
Vince Carter
Lenny Dykstra aka "Nails"
He's funny on Howard Stern, but amazes me how far he has fallen.
OJ Simpson.
Lol good one. But as long as someone's paying the bills why not?
I found it difficult to watch Wheating's last 2-3 years. So much talent, but couldn't seem to get it right.
Will Leer.
Mac Fleet.
Vince can play as long as he wants. I love that he's still hanging on.
Peyton Manning could hardly throw a ball at the end. Sure, he went out a champion, but his defense won him that title. OP, if you're going to talk about QBs who held on too long, you need to start with the right one.
Well, if you're going to nominate Brady then I nominate Barry Sanders.
1997 - 2053 yards, 6.1 per carry, 11 TDs
1998 - 1491 yards, 4.3 per carry, 4 TDs
He clearly sucked it up his last year and should have retired after 1997. It was tough watching him struggle to only 1500 yards his final season. Just didn't know when to hang up the spiked, right?
Shall we discuss Jim Brown's abysmal 5.3 per carry his final season next?

I met Wheating a few weeks ago and he talked a bit about his career. Definitely not happy with how it ended. He works for On now. Super nice guy and really unassuming.
Ali takes the cake though. Jake the Snake was a good one but he did it because of his drug problem. Ali seemed to just want to keep competing.
Colin Kaepernick knew when to hang it up. He hit his prime then exited just at the right time before the decline got embarrassing.
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06
Running for Bowerman Track Club used to be cool now its embarrassing
Hats off to my dad. He just ran a 1:42 Half Marathon and turns 75 in 2 months!
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
