So during my most recent marathon, I came away with a 2:47, which was still good for me but definitely an underperformance when looking at my overall splits during the race. Some background, my training was fairly solid, consisting of training for some shorter races (70-80 mpw) and a long run every other week (got in 3 runs over 20 miles and 6 runs over 17 miles). My half PR is a 1:12, so I think I have the fitness to knock out a fairly solid marathon, like a 2:38-40 or so. I also did some training runs like 13 miles @6flat pace to prepare for this race.
So come the race, I actually go out fairly conservative for myself and run through the first half in about a 1:22, pacing fairly even. I then speed up and knock the next 7 miles or so in about 5:57/8 pace and also feeling pretty good. The next 3 miles I slowed down a little, to maybe a 6:10 to 20 pace, definitely feeling the 20 previous miles on my legs. Then the last 5k It all fell apart, and I average about an 8 minute pace. I think I have 2 explanations, and wanted to know how much you think these impacted that?
1. I wore beat up trainers that had 700+ miles on them to race. Yeah I know dumb, but it was mostly because I was dealing with Achilles issues two weeks prior and was afraid to wear my tight flats. But these trainers were so worn out and clunky that by mile 12 I switched from forefoot striking to heel striking because it was wearing out my hips. But yes, I know dumb decision in retrospect.
2. I only fueled once at mile 10. This also I know, dumb. I was relatively inexperienced with fueling so I just made bad moves with this too.
Do you think these are the primary two reasons for bonking at the end, moreso than a training reason?
