This will cement his legacy as the GOAT in racing.
It is a wise move. He would be spanked to death by Bekele if he attempted the thon.

Assuming Bekele shows up to Tokyo, which I really hope he does. Seeing him beating Choge there would be great

He’s a smart man. He looks at the marathon field, and he knows he has no shot at a medal.
Meanwhile, in the 10K, talent has been watered down a bit. He’s never been the fastest in the world, but he can still be the best in championship-style racing.
Dude wants to cement his legacy, and this is the smartest way to do that.
I think age is catching up with him. He will not medal.
I think Cheptegei, Kipruto etc. are young enough not be stunned by Farah's mere presence and they are also fast enough to get him tired before the last 4 laps.
Kejelcha, gebhreweit, cheptegei, Barega. They will make it fast from the gun. Plus mo don't have Alberto anymore.
1) He is a doper. He should be banned.
2) We had to call him "Mohamed Farah" when he decided to race on the roads, or else we would be labeled islamophobes. He decided he wanted to be named after that famous war lord. Now he gets back to track, are we supposed to call him "Mo" again?

Which will be most shocking in tokyo
Coleman beaten down in 100m
Noah Lyles beaten down in 200m
Cheriyut beaten down in 1500m
Farah beaten down in 5000m
Kipchoge beaten down in mararton
Sifan hasan beaten down in 1500m/5000m/10000m
Brigid Kosgei beaten down in marathon
Farah is running the 10 not the 5. Should make the race more interesting

Seeing all of those athletes being busted for doping just before the games. That would resotre my faith in the sport.

Cheruiyot losing would be very surprising, maybe Manangoi could do it
Wonder how much we'll see of him on track in the next 8 months then? He'll want to post a quali time (27:28) but doesn't need to run the UK trials to get selected (can't see any other UK runners getting the time either).
But you'd expect him to want to have at least 1 run out against some of the current best over 10000m, and perhaps a sharpener or two over 5000m?
It's a brave decision. Would have been easy to say "Marathoning isn't working out for my body, so I've decided to retire from representing my country and will concentrate on non-championship road racing because I just enjoy it"
I can see him coming 4th or 5th in Tokyo, but can't ignore the possibility that he could still win. I'd love to see that, just to hear the love for him on this site from the usual posters ;-)
Where/when did Farah make this announcement?

The Tokyo 10k will be to Farah what the Moscow 10k was to Viren.
Farah will be 37 by 2020 Olympics. Can Farah regain his finishing speed after training for and racing 1/2 & full Marathons? Miruts Yifter did not have years of racing Marathons from 1972 to 1980. If Yifter had destroyed his legs and hips racing Marathons from 1972 to 1980, no way Yifter would have had enough in the tank at age 38 to prevail in 1980 Summer Olympics. I cannot see Farah able to generate sub-1:55 final 800m in a 10000m race anymore. I definitely do not see Farah going out there are racing sub-26:45 10000m. Lastly, Yifter had 48.xx 400m speed since his youth. [If Yifter had grown up in U.S., Yifter would have been an 800/1500 athlete.] Yifter did not need Salazar to create sub-1:55 final 800m speed for Yifter.

He regularly does in training. But he can’t solo a 3:29 a la Tim in Doha.
