For reference, I just did a 1:45 half and walking 20 miles with a 25# pack is about my limit... backpacking a week in the mountains it was a struggle to maintain 12 miles/day with a pack. It's hard to maintain 3mph, usually I'm closer to 2.5mph moving average. I'm also 40 years younger! That's 10-12 hours per day he would have to be on his feet. With a pack. Plus camp setup/tear down. Plus cooking. Plus speeches. I have no idea how a 71 year old managed that for 110 days without getting tendinitis.
When I was at my peak hiking shape I was covering 140 miles per week in the mountains with a 30 lb pack and my half marathon would've been well over 2 hours. There is no correlation.
