He definitely doesn't have the aerobic base to get top 3 against Centro, Engles or Thompson. This year he'll win some slow races and run some decent times, but no chance of Olympic standard or top 3 1500m. Should probably try the 800m this year although Brazier, Murphy, and Hoppel are gonna make that hard too.
What if he pulls a Liquori and moves up to the 5000
Probably won't happen and since he doesn't have enough aerobic base it wouldn't be a great idea.
But I kind of want to see him try and move up one day in the future
Looks like he's training on the Princeton X-C Course.
Robby's back baby!!!
Did you leave out a word?

He has plenty of time to get enough of an aerobic base. But at his best Robby has been a 1:45/3:35 guy since he was like 20. So far he hasn't been any able to take the next step up and he is getting pretty old. Maybe he has just been a bit unlucky with injuries and the like but at some point you have to accept that this is the top of his talent level/training level.

This poster must be 16 years old and too young to remember how good Robbie Andrews was and likely will be at the us champs

I showed his NCAA winning 800 to a sprinter friend once and he very calmly said "boy's got wheels." Very few people had a top end that high. Took him a couple years to adjust to the pros but he was a killer for several years and could have potentially medaled last olympics.

Yeah. Highest mileage week ever.
i'm wondering why former 800 guys after they have issues doing 1500m and increased distance, why they don't go back to basics that got them there in the first place.
things like 50 miles per week, good recovery, and plenty of easy speed work, advancing to some quality 400m, 600m stuff.
once they are solid at the 8, then move up with some more mileage, and go after the 15.
100 miles per week is not the solution for recovering shape for a speed guy, they can do the 100 if they're already firing on all cylinders.
in other words, if you are a speed guy and can't run a good 8, do you really think that a focus on aerobic is the key? against aerobic monsters???
nah.
have fun in recovery, fool around with low mileage and sprinting, and bring the body back as it is ready.
going fast with plenty of recovery is fun, a good way to be.
Expect great things????
What? He was an Olympic medal threat. Got sick. Recovered. He is clearly lacking in aerobic base after sitting out the last couple of seasons so he built up a big base this fall and will work on his wheels over the next 6 months. That makes total sense f you're starting from scratch and have one year before the Olympics.
Good luck Robby.
What was his illness where he couldn’t get out of bed before noon?

Lyme Disease, right? That's a very complex and hideous illness. Little understood, very different from patient to patient. Some "experts" say that once you have it, you never get rid of it. On the other hand, I remember that during the running boom some cardiologist said that if you ran a marathon, you wouldn't have a heart attack. Tell that to Jim Fixx!! Tell that to that Man of the Hour, Alberto Salazar! So MDs aren't know-it-alls, and some of them finished at the bottom of their class in med school, too.
Let's hope Robby triumphs over this bast*rd called Lyme Disease. I sure do! Robby, if you're reading this, good luck!
Lyme disease
What if, (and just hear me out on this one), our boy Bobby Andrews moves his way up to the 5000
A 1500 specialization doesn't need that much mileage or aerobic base. That is not the problem now that he has Lyme that is the big problem.
A lot of the best didn't really run as many miles as they led others to believe.
In the 80s one of the women 3,000-meter specialists I knew ran about 80 miles a week and was ranked as high as #3 that I remember. When she went to the 5,000 she did up to 100-mile weeks and ran some records.
Another one of the women 3,000-meter specialists I knew ran only 40 miles a week and was ranked as high as #6. She only ran 8 mile long runs during the XC season. In track season she ran long runs of 6 miles and 10K. Years later when she ran a record 5K time she prepared with up to 70-mile weeks and an 11-mile long run.
I never needed much mileage either. It depends on the individual. You have to know what's best for yourself.
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
Move over Mark Coogan, Rojo and John Kellogg share their 3 favorite mile workouts
Mark Coogan says that if you could only do 3 workouts as a 1500m runner you should do these
Red Bull (who sponsors Mondo) calls Mondo the pole vaulting Usain Bolt. Is that a fair comparison?
