I'm wondering where the previous track coach went.
Well, I would say this is a first but not surprising. You would never see an Assistant Football/Custodian job posted!

University of Idaho Assistant Coach position posted today. Closes on 12/11/2020 to bring in position as soon as possible in the new year. Salary $32,500.
Possible areas of expertise are sprints, hurdles, vertical jumps, multis....experience in all not necessary. Director of program will coach horizontal jumps and some of the other events listed above, depending on expertise of final candidate selected.
Facilities include 300m indoor track during indoor season, dedicated outdoor track facility, great weight room, fun athletes, and great coworkers.
Previous sprints coach made a career move to another position in the university outside of athletics.
It was mentioned on this thread just a few posts ago by a poster called Quartz Alum, who was in the ballpark and said:
“One of AV’s coaches also doubles back as a teacher for our school district, and said Mays moved permanently to a volunteer position or a part time position after normal pay never resumed post-covid with the salaries being slashed. May’s family has started fostering siblings which motivated the decision. I am unaware of what his involvement consists of now, but it’s minimal. With May’s building their program in it’s entirely, I am hoping someone can come in and keep their success going.”
Knowing a little more information than quartz alumni, there are a couple of things to note and correct.
Most of my information is coming from a couple of his former teammates.
Point 1- Mayes has not started fostering.
Mayes detailed they will be fostering to adopt 2 siblings and have already gone through the process and background check to do so. They will start fostering before Christmas.
Point 2- This may be a game of telephone but the impression I have is pay was being limited with working many hours. Additionally, UAV wanted something between 70-75 or 80 student-athletes for track and xc at UAV. They have somewhere between 30 to 40 now, and UAV needs to update their roster for this 2020/2021 school year. Before Mayes, they had a bunch of basketball players listed for their cross country roster.
Point 3- In regards to the notes on the pay reduction, it was reduced by a little over 50% at UAV when covid hit the national crisis standard and it never returned to normal. This is why I have avoided coaching at private colleges, less stable.
Point 4- In regards to Mayes starting the process to teach for the Antelope Valley School district. That is true.
The pay is twice as high teaching vs UAV’s current salary to coach. I am ballparking this estimate with what little knowledge I do have. Do not take my words to heart.
Point 5- At the moment Mayes is a volunteer coach at UAV. Like quartz alumni said, I am also unsure what that might entail. After Facebook creeping it seems like he is still very much involved. Maybe looks can be deceiving.
I grew up right down the road in Palmdale, and I didn’t even know UAV existed just a few years ago. What I do know is they are not held ethically to high standards.
I must agree that it was fun watching the program develop so quickly in the last two years, but with just a little research, it is easy to see the college has its share of challenges.
Unless the college grew a lot in the last 18 months, the campus consists of just one building. It is just that small of a college. It is also in a rough part of Antelope Valley. I do not believe UAV even has athletic facilities for their campus.
That’s all the information I have. I reached out to Clay to see how everything was going a few days ago, but never received an answer. Will update as needed.
