A bit of background: male, 29, 17:50 5km and 37:30 10km.
Usually run 40 miles a week with the a few 50 mile weeks thrown in but I want to make a fairly big leap in my overall training mileage whilst minimizing injury risk. In my mind I want to make 60 miles a weekly goal pretty much straight off the bat.
I'm after a bit of advice/guidance from people who've made big mileage increases in their training. I hear the general rule of not increasing by more than 10% each week? Adding 20 miles a week does sound like a lot but if it's all easy with one speed session and experimenting building my 'long run' I think I can get away with it. What can I expect whilst going through this increase? Feeling tired is obvious but should I expect some big improvements in my speed and fitness just by doing more? Whenever I speak to experienced runners I get the impression that doing as many miles as you can handle is always the best approach. Should I expect extra niggles and run through them through this phase whilst my body gets used to the extra work.
