I've been dealing with severe inner ankle pain for over nine months now after any type of running. I was one of our best xc/track athletes (18yr old male now in last year of highschool) when I developed this pain which put me out. The pain has shifted around a bit but had always been on or right next to my medical malleolus on the inside of my left foot, aggravated by inversion. I was doing ~50mpw in late January of this year when the pain started, which I thought was tendonitis and ran through until it stopped me in late March. I went into an experience orthopedic who specializes with runners (foot and ankle) and he diagnosed me with posterior tibial tendonitis, putting me in a boot for six weeks. The time passed and I still had pain. They ordered an MRI and it showed a stress reaction still present in my medial malleolus, 7 more weeks in a boot. Finally could bike, but not run for a few weeks. As I started to finally build up mileage again, I could not run more than 6mi a week or run in general with severe after-run pain right below and on the medial malleous. It has been 17 weeks out of the boot now and I still can't run without after run pain (very little pain during run), following my buildup plan which I constructed with my orthopedic and (long time and very experienced) PT as meticulously as possible. I am 155lbs, muscular, very healthy (religious about diet, stress, lifting, stretching, and sleep). Both the ortho and PT are officially stumped as to what my 'mystery injury' could be at this point. The orthopedic is currently contacting another foot and ankle specialist to see what he can get from them and mentioned some type of syndrome (forgot the name) that could require surgery, and as of now I am only biking and lifting. He also said I could just be "not made to run" based on the anatomical structure of my ankle, but he thinks that's very unlikely given my family has not had similar issues and I have been running for a while. I really need help here, any ideas or hunches would be appreciated. I just want my ankle to heal!
