Over the past 5 years I have repeatedly had pain, redness, swelling, and resulting limping located on the outside of the big toe joint. The pain seems to come after upping my training and lasts for 1-2 mos then vanishes for months at a time. The pain is substantial (7 out of 10), is circular with a radius of about 3cm, and is located at roughly a 45 degree angle off the big toe joint (neither on top nor the side of the joint.) Over the years I've had this issue in both feet. The only thing that helps is ice.
Seen multiple podiatrists who are stumped. Have had blood tests and joint fluid extraction tests that ruled out Gout/Pseudogout. Also no sign of chronic arthritis in MRI/Xray/Sonograms.
I'm 41, 6'1", 170lbs.
Theories that I've come across:
--Tightness in calves/shins leads to misstepping which in turn jams/aggravates the joint
--Improper/too_tight sneakers (for the past couple years I have been running in NB 880; 11.5 EE)
Would really appreciate any advice or thoughts. Thanks in advance.
