How many pairs of running shoes do you have that, in a pinch, you could run in? For me, it's...
Spikes 4
XC flats 2
Trail 5
Road 20
TOTAL: 31
Shoes I've run in over the past 6 months or so: 17
Shoes in current rotation: 5

Too f*cking many. I picked up a part time gig at the local running store about a year ago, so it gave me access to lots of perks and discounts. I went a bit crazy trying new things because it was easy to just pick up a new pair for like $40 every now and then, but I was only locked into certain brands(Asics, Brooks, Mizuno, Sauconcy, Salomon). Turns out I hate most of those brands after trying their shoes and now have a bunch of shoes I don't want to wear. It was pretty bad when I've got brand new pairs of shoes from those brands, and I would choose to run in my year old pair of Beacons I already had, with like 500+ miles on them instead.
I actually just started cleaning and donating the shoes I don't wear. I shelled out for some new Beacons, no special rate, just regular sale that anyone else would have access to, because I know those shoes work for me and that's gonna be my go-to pair. Decided to just cut the BS, and just be done with it. I had my little adventure and learned my lesson.
Moral of the story, run in what's comfy for you. Don't follow hype or sales.
Too many. Eight to 10 pair at a time, and I don't even run big miles anymore.
Running shoes are an affliction that I love.
1 pair. I've used them for over a year now. Will keep using them until the fall apart.
Five pair in rotation right now:
- brooks launch
- Saucony rides
- Adidas adios
- Hoka speedgoat
- Salomon sense rides
Shoe closet is otherwise maxed out with wife’s 1000 shoes.
2x Brooks Adrenalin 17
2x Asics GT2000
1x Asics GT1000 (homemade winter shoes with 1/4" hex heads for ice)
Keep a set at work, and at home.
I try to keep shoes until about ~2,000 miles. Shoe Goo helps me repair or "retread" them.
The ice shoes, I replace the hex heads once a year, unless needed.
Five pairs that I use semi-regularly: three Saucony Kinvaras of various vintages and models, one Skechers, one Nike Lunartempo II. One pair of Lunartempos in the box that haven't been worn yet. I really think that's enough, or more than enough, for someone who doesn't need track spikes or shoes for icy conditions.
I also have several pairs that I've retired from running and turned into everyday wearing-around shoes. I have a bad insertional Achilles tendonosis so I've chopped the backs out of the right shoe in all of the retired shoes. I can't run in them that way, but taking all the pressure off the back of my heel at all times except when running has made the condition manageable.
3 for me
Main trainer the Boston 8
Tempo and racer Adios 3

Ain't that the truth!
I use two pair for actual training. The rest are used for working around the house. Walking the dog in the rain, etc.
5 pairs. All of them adidas adios, with 2 of them the boost version. Oldest pair is 8 years old, newest is 4 years old. They all have in excess of 800 miles on them, the oldest having at least 1500 miles. I’ve retired maybe 4 other adios shoes in the last 5 years.
I have a brand new pair of mizuno flats in the closet, along with a takumi sen. I’ll break those out as soon as I lose 30 lbs or so.
I developed a shoe habit working in a running shop...at least running shoes are cheaper than bikes.
Kinvara x3
Freedom
Boston
Epic React x2 (Got the second pair before I realize react turns to jello after 75 miles and brick when the temp goes below 30)
Adios x2
Sense Pro
Sense Ride
TNF Ultra Vertical
Streak LT
=14. Not including spikes.
I might have a problem. Glad I'm in good company.
Or , you know, 13 if you can count well. Apparently I have two problems.
A dozen, but I probably have a much different buying pattern than others with this many. I buy very infrequently (1 pair this year, 2 pairs last year...), but keep the shoes around until they are blown out several times over, sometimes mending uppers multiple times. I try to hit at least 1000 miles per pair, and some of my shoes that I still use date back to 2012. The 5 pairs that I'm wearing the most at the moment have at least 800 miles on them.
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
