If Mary Cain were to attempt a comeback, it would have to be at 800m. She does not need any ex-Marathoners in her ears worrying her about weight. From age 18 through her early twenties Cain chased the sub-4 1500m dream with a Marathoner in her ears. She would need a sprint coach in her training camp. She needs to get weight lifting strong for her body weight. She needs to sit down with a sprint coach and review her sprinting form on super slow motion. Training with a Marathon coach has made her go backwards. She needs to do it the other way. Get her 400m time down to 54 or 55 and go from there. Mary C most likely has a long way to go regarding training for 800m. Can she do a 10 x 100m workout with decent rest and average sub-15 seconds today?

Cain's body has had time to recover from what she went through at NOP. She's only 23, could she make a comeback with the right coach? Who could bring her back to at least being competitive nationally? (I think her chances of Olympic/WC medals are over but maybe she could still make teams at least)
Why not? She is 23 and talent does not go away.

It does. It really does.
The video she posted where she was running at Mammoth, she was injured. That was kind of the point of the video. She was hobbling because she was injured. If now she can run, then she is healing. Maybe she can come back to her previous times, maybe not. She is young and very talented. I would love to see her get back to a fast 800. All posters who write insults about her should eat a bag of ducks.

Just think if Al Sal were coaching Brenda Martinez. Just think what would have happened to Al Sal's jaw if he would have tried to ridicule Brenda Martinez about her weight. I'm certain Al Sal's jaw would be held together with wires and a permanent plate. Hasn't Brenda Martinez always had a higher percentage of body fat and greater mass than Mary Cain? Eight-hundred metres runners do not need to be skinny. I know most on let'sjog think sprinting speed is genetic. Not true. These 1/2 a dozen years of Mary Cain training as a 1500m/5000m athlete has killed her raw speed she had as a teenager. I doubt Cain can regain her 200m/400m speed. Cain always was an 800m runner. The problem: Salazar saw Cain as a 1500m/5000m runner.[/quote]
This made me laugh so hard. And you are so right. Brenda seems like she wouldn't have put up with Salazar's weight critic sh&%. More runners need to take this path. Runners, particularly at the top levels, can be a neurotic bunch. It is a breath of fresh air to see people who break the mold.

What runner with exceptional talent has actually had their performance collapse for 5+ years and come back from it to be better than before?
Not Webb.
Not McDougal.
Not Wheating.
Not Solinsky.
Kenenisa Bekele is the only real example, and a poor one at that, since he never actually regained his form on the track, and simply moved to the marathon (where he is an absolute wildcard in terms of performance).
Uncoachable.

Mary Decker.
Ron Clarke
Carlos Lopes probably falls into that category.
i think she can.she's really an 800/1500 runner, and if she can get her speed back, she'll get there.

Seriously, what the he** is the matter with you? What kind of horrible excuse for a human being would make that kind of a comment about a young woman who has done nothing to you personally, let alone any woman at all. You are a sorry and pathetic loser and really need to grow up (regardless of how old you are).

Lotta true in this statement, lotta truth . Hardiest thing for coaches to do is let athletes run the event they are best at and not the event the coach knows the most about.
The upcoming world class coach JS should probably fit her perfect. He could help her to reach her dream goals.
+1
One of the several reasons East Africans dominate the marathon is their ability to maintain skeletal frames and not break down. Cain could podium in the 800m by next summer.
When I first raced against Kenyans, I was stunned at how skinny they were in real life. The guy's lower leg was just bones covered by skin with a calf muscle about the size of a tennis ball cut in half.
With coach js she will be a force again.Try this great upcoming coach Mary.

Kind of a poor example don’t you think?
