Bump. Like usual she made the tweet all about herself. "come to me" "talk to me"
These women are so not credible.

. . . Ok, Brit.
In case you didn't know, TinaInCali, American kids think that's a putdown. So you should be offended.

Cool, memebot.
So she didn't know Al Sal was insanely driven? The same guy who was knocking on deaths door in a few races himself?
So far about all she said was: Al Sal was a mean "Man" to me!
We all knew (Or should have known) Al was not the most personable person out there. Where are the doping violations? I don't see anything of substance here.

Except maybe a combo of birth control pills and diuretics for weight loss. Not sure how grey this area is and how substantial the charges are. It's certainly not her main point. Either there wasn't anything or (like Goucher) she does not want to out herself as a doper.
I really hate the invititation of a slippery slope when any bad or a**hole behavior is called "abuse" and the reader is invited to think of sexual abuse that did not take place at all. Shaming before the team is maybe bad, but it is neither groping nor raping nor anything like that and one should not use the term abuse so lightly if its main sense nowadays is connected with sexual misconduct.
Jackie Areson has come out today supporting Mary’s story with a few stories of her own.
I've read most of this thread but not all of it so forgive me if these things have been discussed.
1) Why didnt Mary Cain just continue to be coached by her high school coach? Bronxville has been strong in middle distance for a long time. Her coach got her down to 1:59 and 4:04 so he must know something.
2) I'm quite dumbfounded why it seemed Salazar wanted to make Mary Cain into a 1500/5000 runner. I don't think she was nearly as impressive in cross country as she was on the track.
3) I think her body started to change at a bad time. Whatever you want to call it - growth spurt, filling out, weight gain, etc. She probably wasn't given an adjustment period by Salazar. He probably worked with female athletes a little bit older who handled those issues earlier and were ready for more intense training. So I can understand, not justify, the frustrations Salazar had with Mary Cain not running as fast and not looking as fit as he expected.
4) I guess she should have gone to college where some of her changes could be related to the college experience. Then she could have joined one of the pro teams ready to take the next step.
This is a YOU problem. She didn’t say sexual abuse. If that’s where your head immediately goes, go get your head checked out.
So let me get this straight - 20-something former HS star uses the cover of a flimsy USADA ban to pile on? When's the book coming out?
Also, hey Mom and Dad - you suck at parenting.
Yesterday I went over to visit my uncle Buck and we had a load of beers. I feel unhealthy today. We played a game of chess and watched movies and stuff. My mom was wondering where I went. She doesn't like me being near him because he is the "bad uncle", is no good, lazy and once hit on her. I enjoy the company. He is giving me advice on dating. Expect to see a more alpha banana bread soon.
You’re married?!
I'm sure he intended the birth control and diuretics to be her initial introduction to the slippery slope aka doping

Wow!...that's crazy! Mice compared to Russian star Svetlana Masterkova who's listed at 5-7 1/2 and 130. And Masterkova was no slouch running 3:56/1:55, former WR holder in mile (Hassan broke it) and double-gold at Atlanta. This is one powerful big woman back in the day:

Thank you for responding. I didn't know that about the boys--so after she left the program went downhill a bit on the boys side or girls or both?
How are her mechanics sloppy? I am new to distance running to an extent and am not being sarcastic. I watched her run and her stride seemed off a bit but her upper body was fine.
Like I said, correct me if I'm wrong--I don't know much.
Cain is a professional athlete............a warrior........not a little girl. Those that think women deserve equal treatment, and then play this stupid (metoo, what about her health, bad man/coach/company treating her badly) bullshit don't get it.
Say a strength coach tells a football player to get on gear, bulk up to 350 (not healthy) and do whatever it takes to win............good, right? We cheer them on. Real warriors are happy to do it too.
Women can be warriors. Everyone who says Alberto/Nike is bad belittle women.
Back in the early ‘90s, I ran in a fairly competitive D3 cross country program. Our coach never, bit a once, mentioned weight (though I can only speak for the men’s team), and in fact encourage a hearty enjoyment of food in many team gatherings. But almost every member of the women’s team had, at one point or another, to some degree, an eating disorder, isuaall sone hybrid anorexia/bulimia mix. We’d cringe as we watched the descent into emancipation and then some crisis moment (fainting mid race, mid season breakdown) and then sigh of relief as they got some help or just got away from the sport. But the disorders were mostly generated internally, the competitive spirit with high expectations responding to the siren call of fast times from weight loss.
So, let’s not get ahead of ourselves in pinning this on some sort of patriarchal conspiracy to control the body image of female athletes. Much of it is generated internally.

In high school her arms swung across her body, I think one more than the other if memory serves. Al Sal tried to straighten out the arm swing but she looked tight and uncomfortable with the change in form.

To be perfectly honest, all she was alluding to when she mentioned this was that she didn't ever really have a team aspect to the sport, making pro a more appealing option than college. You have to remember that New York allows for you to compete with your high school team in middle school, so some of this began back in 7th grade. When she was talking about it, she just said that she was mainly running with the upperclassman boys because they were her level and after they graduated, in addition to her never really finding a team with the girls, she did not have that team aspect anymore. She did not go deeper than that.
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!

How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
