Paying $25 to do a time trial seems like a bigger waste of money than $40 to compete

You're right but upon further examination the $40 race looks like it could be a time trial as well with no prize money. Nobody under 18 minutes at that one last year. Good lord, what's the point anymore.

The point is that if all the fast guys say, "what's the point anymore", then races will continue to be won in lousy times. An 18 minute 5ker beats everyone that doesn't show up. So show up. Then next year, other fast guys will see your respectable winning time, and they'll show up, too.
It's kinda like the people who say, "all the candidates suck; I'm not voting." You're just encouraging more bad candidates.
Speaking of ridiculous fees, I just came across a $45 5k. On a closed course in a park, so no need for police. No shirt included. 4 hr time limit... for a 5k... FOUR... HOURS. Excerpt from the race details:
“ Our races are super low-key and non-competitive; we'd prefer to race you vs. you. Feel free to run, walk, or prance around; there is no running police here!”
I think we’ve reached the hobby jogger apocalypse.
They mention the race does include a massive medal that looks just like a medal from a popular major marathon.

Well I often squawk about the same thing around here, so I know what you're saying. I'm just not inclined to do either race because both will essentially be a park run without prize money or competition. I love the joy of racing as much as anyone but when I have to pay $40 for a park run, I'm not thrilled about that. If either race made it obvious that I would get something, anything for top 3, I would be there. But no, it's $40 for a load of swag I don't want in the first place.
I just got an email for a $44 5k and $59 turkey trot. That’s the discounted price. Prices go up $5 next week
Shutup? you're a 21:30 guy regardless

Winning answer. Seriosuly, who pays for a Turkey Trot? They are some of the worst produced races of the year and often disorganized. You just get in the crowd and run.

There is a $70 entry fee to a 5k in California. Shocking. $140 for myself and wife.

I WAS shocked until I read California. Bargain 5K. Probably not well managed
After moving to Germany I found the prices for local runs quite expensive. Here, I’d sometimes pay up to 10 euros . In The Netherlands, I’d use to run this half marathon that was 5 euros (or 7 if you want a medal). I was a bit shocked when I ran my first US race when on holiday... y’all want so much money. That said, I do feel like the crowds are much nicer, ours often stare at you and only clap for the one person they know :)

Yea, but your races don't get a guaranteed medal, t-shirt, inflatable finish line, donuts, top 5 age group awards, instant timing results, and DJ and post-race music. Take that, European Union!
