I wouldn’t say Geis and Pre were great friends. I think Geis did look up to Pre some and Pre “tolerated” him. (Because of the press Paul got as “the next Pre”). One time, after practice and while changing out of spikes in the stands, Pre mentioned that he once ran 11 seconds for a 110 yard (100 meters) repeat. (We did them with a running start). Geis kept saying that there was NO WAY Pre could run that fast. This REALLY ticked Pre off. Pre threatend to “punch his lights out.” True story. I was there.

U of O team mate of Pre, '76 Olympian at 5000. Sad to hear of his passing yesterday. RIP
He was never a teammate of Pre. He transferred from Rice and was inneligible during Pre's last year of running for Oregon
I was in HS when he was at Oregon and I was a big fan. He was kind of like Pre in that he looked pretty cool looking and confident.
Pre took some mild shots at Geis in public but I've read that they were actually close and Geis was devasted when Pre died.
Geis qualified for 1972 NCAA outdoors. He was so enchanted with Eugene he immediately transferred, irregardless of having to sit out a year. A small price to pay.

Sh*t, he just popped into my mind yesterday (Weds). Paul was a good guy and a great teammate.
Rest in peace, Paul, and thanks for the kindness and memories as a teammate.
Thanks! Didn’t know him before, now I do.
Great article from T&F News. Before my time but still a fascinating window into vernacular and distance running culture then.
As to soundimg of Geis’ name, for letter combinations of “ie” and “ei” in Germanic words, the second vowel determines pronunciation.
Sad news. As a teamate and competitor of his I have found memories of Paul. The last time de competed was in the 76 Olympics 5000.
I just saw his photo on some website just the other day. Can't remember where, and it had nothing to do with his death. I paused for a moment, wondered what he was up to, and then moved on. I'm of an age where I remember all of Paul's contemporaries from devouring T and F News in the days long before LetsRun. RIP, Paul.

Are you sure about that? According to T&FN, Geis was ranked 8th nationally in in the 5,000 in 1977 and 10th in 1979. He was ranked 9th in the 10,000 in 1979 and 5th in 1980.
Geis competed through 1980. He set his 10,000m personal best in 1980 and won the Prefontaine 10,000m that year.

Knut, it finally dawned on me that you meant to type "we." But initially I thought "de" meant "he."
