I was talking to a girl at work who runs competitively quite often. She told me about her diet, supplements she takes, vitamins etc. Then casually mentioned how she has slow release testosterone tablets or pills (whatever they are called) injected every 12 weeks. She continued on to brag about how much energy she has, no 2pm crash etc. I was, perhaps a bit naïve, but shocked to hear.
I go home and tell my wife this story, and she tells me that three of her friends, who are also age group runners, do the same thing. Like it's nothing. One of them just BQ'd for the first time after about ten years of trying.
So here I know four people that are supplementing with testosterone. My guess is that they are doing the anti-aging thing, and not specifically trying to cheat in their age group running.. but, they are. Probably not even knowingly. Doctor draws blood and says "Yep, T levels are a bit low.. we can do something about that" and that's all there is to it, I assume.
Seems a bit out of control and quite ridiculous how common this is. I wonder how many people in my AG do the same thing locally.
