Almaz Ayana is the Bekele of cute girls. I can't wait to see her win gold in the 10,000m and Bekele gold in the thon.
She could just run the 5000m and 1500m instead. Problem solved. IF Ayana manages to get back in the same insane shape as 4 years ago that is. I hope she does.

Lol, I'm going start using that as my pick up line.

She should try for 1500m/5000m/10000m triple.
I think they again messed up the schedule so that 1500/5000m is impossible for women. So if Hassan wants a chance for a double she has to do 5000/10000m.

When I watched Ayana win in Rio and London I thought she was untouchable in the 10000m. If Hassan runs the 10000m in Tokyo (Ayana will not be doubling this time so will focus only on the 10k) she will need to adapt to Ayanas early and relentless surge if she is to win.
I know from discussions with her husband that all her training programmes are focussed on honing her natural running gift which is running alone at high pace.
In many ways Hassan and Ayana are opposite types of runner. With the exception of the 1500m in Doha, Hassan tends to lurk at the back and win with a burst of speed over the last lap, whereas Ayana wins from 16 laps out.
If we look at the Doha 10000m, Gidey made her move with 3-4 laps to go and Hassan was able to cover that. Ayana wins by running at sub 30 pace for 12-16 laps of the race all alone.
Another factor to consider is that Ayana will not be contesting the 5000m ( from what I’ve been told) so she can leave it all out there in the 10.
But let’s not forget Gidey, I’ve been mighty impressed with her this season. And she’s so young!
What proportion of top athletes go on to match or better their performances after surgery ?
ayana gets this one.hassan has faster leg speed, but almaz ayana would know how to beat her.she'd certainly win the 10'000,simply by running the sting out of sifan hassan, and everyone else.in a grand prix 5000,she'd do the same thing, churning out lap after lap, till everyone has gone.she beat genzebe dibaba that way,and she'd do the same to hassan.
I don't think Hassan will ever get back into this super shape, with her doper coach out of the picture. But we'll see.
It is both an open question if Ayana will ever be back in 2016-17 shape (or close) and if Hassan will improve on or come close to the past season.
Unless she runs WR or below, I don't think Ayana would beat the Hassan of 2019 in the 5k. Hassan ran 8:18 in the 3k and she was not yet in Doha shape then. Her 14:22 was in an intially slowish race with a blazing last 3 laps and I think she could have run 5k WR or close in race that was faster from the beginning. It's another thing in the 10k where Hassan might get dropped if Ayana ran 29:30 pace and could bring it home. I think Gidey and Klosterhalfen can also get to sub 30 min next year, they are closest in type and strengths to Ayana among the younger runners, i.e. not that fast on the last lap but capable of hard solo running early on.

Haile Gebrselassie had Achilles surgery right before the 2004 Olympic games. Went on to have a pretty good career for about another decade. Lasse Viren had surgery between the 72 and 76 Olympics and returned just as dominate. Especially with the advances in knee surgeries. I wouldn't doubt it at all if she came back to her 2016 rio level.

I hope she goes for the 1500m/marathon double instead. Would be more impressive IMO.
You noticed she is with Nike now....
Nope, 800-10k double.
Hopefully a clean race. My money is on Hassan. She's a killer, I like her chances.
Wake me when they both show up on the start list for the final.

Yeah, I caught that, too. That means possible drug use, right? Can anyone name any athlete in any sport who was busted or even heavily suspected without Nike since Ben Johnson? I think he may have been the last juicer in another shoe. Lance and Bonds, of course, sported the Swoosh. It's the only brand that fairly openly encourages it, and even includes it in contracts as far as I know (see Gatlin).

and even then, if either is in the shape of their lives it will be hard for the other to win but how often does that happen? I think I'd take the field over these ladies in the 5k.
