Lasitskene won the indoors Euros this year. She also took part in the Europe vs USA team comp in Minsk, a new format that Iaaf wants to develop further.
Sifan did neither of those.
Sifan was born in Ethiopia and now lives in Oregon, I assume Mariya is in Russia. Has to factor in.

Someone who couldn't even beat the HM WR in cheater shoes (let alone finish 1st) should have won the AotY??
Only track/distance basementers would have voted this.
You do know she was one of the leaders when tripped from behind by one of the pacers? Still was able to get up and pass all but one of the leaders to finish 2nd almost catching up to someone who was running close to World Record pace

Yes Lasitskene won her 3rd straight HJ world title and won 22 of 24 competitions, clearing 2.0m 18 times but I'd have thought it would have gone to Hassan.
What do you think?
Warholm won the men's award as would be expected.

Sifan Hassan got robbed...plain and simple. Hassan had a historically great season, being ranked number one in 3 events. Lasitsken had a great season as well, but nowhere near the type of season Hassan had. In fact, Lasitsken has had better years and she didn't win European AOY.

Chalk it up to suspicion about Hassan’s performances.
This may be it. It would be pretty embarassing if the athlete of the year gets busted for doping down the road.
Hassan definitely deserves performance of the year for her legendary double at Worlds but only top 3 for Athlete of The Year. She posted too many loses early season and not enough competitions compared to other athletes to overlook those loses. Performance definitely, A.o.Y- No way.
Hassan did not show up at the party and preferred to go to Valencia to get another run in, it makes sense then to give it to someone who does. After all, this is only about entertainment.
The Sad truth is Hassan is not European on many people eyes. She is African even after so many years living in Netherlands. If Laura Moore was the women she did what Hassan did, there would not have been a competition. She would have won it easily.
The second reason could be because Hassan coach was banned for doping allegation, so her credibility is destroyed by him.
Having a coach who was just handed a 4 year ban may have something to do with it?

Silliest thing I've read recently. She set a world record in the mile. The fastest non Chinese 3k in history, won diamond league titles in 1500 and 5k, and a double world title. The high jump competition is the historically weakest it's been in more than 20 years. There is hardly a female who has jumped over 2 meters.
I don't think there is any world class middle or long distance runner who has competed as much as Hassan did last season. Not even mentioning the range and number of important marks and wins. Salazar's ban is the only reason she didn't get the award. But even then I think it should have been given to Mihambo or KJT (both will probably get their respective countries female T&F of the year) or maybe Asher-Smith. Because while Lasitskene is amazing she was not particularly strong the past season and it is also true that female HJ is pretty weak right now. Whereas 1500 - half marathon would be very strong even without Hassan.

Indeed. To not give that cheat this award is actually a wise decision.
The amount of 2.00m jumps for Lasitskene was impressive and 22 wins out of 24 competitions is also impressive.
Don't get me wrong I hope Hassan is clean because she is very a very likeable athlete who lives and breath ONLY running.
The FACT is she did post has dropping performances but her 10 wins out 15 competitions is the only reason she won't win athlete of the year in Europe or T&FN. That's a 67% win percentage for Hassan In 2019. YES she amazed us but she also lost too many times which CANOT be overlooked. In fact it's safe to say she wasn't even the best distance athlete as that will go to Brigid Kosegi 11 races-11 wins.
