Comparing marks from say 2019 to 1989 is tough to do as technology, drugs and drug testing have changed a lot. So Malcolm Gladwell a few years back suggested on the House of Run podcast that we start looking at "Decade Records" instead of World Records. So here they are:

I would not have bet that someone other than Usain Bolt would be the 200m record holder for that decade, but there we are.

If I made a random suggestion that we should start looking at Records corresponding to sunspot cycles, would you write an article about it? -
I would have guessed where all the men’s 1500 performances were. Anyone who reads a lot of top lists and all-time on the IAAF site like I do, would.

How about a non-Cheaterfly top-ten marathon times list?
And in terms of Americans lagging behind the world, I'm not sure anything can top the marathon differentials. At 4:28 behind the WR, Rupp would be getting lapped in the 10K, not setting the decade's third-best time.
