You know what's easier than a 12x400 workout? Entering a local early season meet and running an 800.
Four-hundred metres & 400mH athletes do better in 400m repeat workouts than 400m & 400mH athletes are able to race 800m. Post an 8K or five mile tempo run by D Mohammed in sub-30 minutes before I believe D Mohammed is near elite 800m fitness.
Who says you have to be able to do a 30min 8k to run sub 2 as a woman? If you are a predominantly fast-twitch runner, adding hard 8k tempos to your base phase seems unnecessary and potentially counter productive. Her 12x400 workout will take her roughly 26min... is that not enough aerobic support for an 800? She can already run a 5:10 mile which is equivalent to a 30min 8k. What am I missing? It seems like all she would really need to do is switch to more 800m specific workouts coming out of her base phase.
Concurrent Ability vs. Potential
She has more than adequate potential to run sub 2. The training required to run sub 2 is different than the training required to break the 400mh world record. It is highly unlikely that she'd have the fitness to do both concurrently. If you try to train for both simultaneously, you typically end up mediocre at both. Obvious exceptions on the mens side are Alberto Juantarena and more recently Emmanuel Korir. The female comparables are mostly mired in PED and intersex controversy. A max effort for 2min is considered 50% aerobic, so for elite men this proportion is slightly lower ~45% at 1:45. Based on duration alone men have the advantage in terms of having concurrent fitness to be elite performers at both 400 and 800.
