I think Shalane would have been better walking away after her NYC win but there has been some worse exit strategies.
Bob Kennedy got blasted in the 2008 trials and then ran a horrible NY Marathon before walking away.
I feel bad for current broken legends like Ritz or Cragg as I don’t think they have an exit strategy and we will remember them poorly.
Don't be ridiculous, no one knows what the future holds.
Meb should have retired after his win in New York, was clearly his last great hurrah. Oh wait, he went on to win Boston, make 2 Olympic teams finishing 4th in London.
Bekele should have retired years ago.... except he just missed Kipchoge's WR by 2 seconds.
With a short career window, you might as well cash in for as long as you can. A just because you go through a bad spell doesn't mean you're done. As disappointing as the last few years o Ryan's Hall career was 10 years from now it will be a footnote to most people. Athlete's like Shalene, Ritz, and Cragg don't owe it to anyone but themselves to decide how and when they go out. It's also really hard for many people to walk away from something they've dedicated their lives to for 15 or 20 years.
