Hello,
I’m wondering If someone could please share their experience with labral tears, Piriformis or high hamstring issues and their connection. I realize that there are other postings about labral tears, but I am looking for specifics with my symptoms. They don’t seem to mirror a “typical” labral tear’s symptoms. This causes my doctor to doubt that the labral tears shown (MRI, MRA) on both sides would not be causing my symptoms.
here is what I have experienced:
-on and off glute pain for a few years- this never stopped my training, but Felt like more of an annoyance.
-Symptoms got so bad this past February that I could no longer run. I felt stiff and stuck while running and, felt deep glute pain/pain around piriformis area, And high hamstring(by crease of butt) pain. I cramp up when sitting after a few minutes and it gets worse with legs crossed.
- I do not feel hip flexor or groin pain, though the hip flexor area is tight. (This is what puzzled my ortho doc)
- I experienced similar symptoms (deep Glute pulling/pain) on the right side, but not as intense as the right side. The hamstring area wasn’t a problem on the right side.
Prior to March 2019
Running 80-100 miles per week (have run 60+ miles per week since 2012, have gradually increased, have not made any major changes)
--- After discomfort was unbearable in marathon race at the end of March, I took 2 weeks completely off of running. This seemed to help at first, but the discomfort quickly came back.
What I have tried starting in April 2019
-PT (focusing on hip strength/mobility, pelvis stabilization) for 4+ months
-Running much slower and much shorter than normal with a 20 minute warm up getting glutes firing and mobilizing the hip.
-dry needing to glute/piriformis and hamstring
-deep massage to glute and hamstring and lower back
-Complete rest from running, only did light biking or ellitpical for 8 weeks along with PT exercises
-Complete rest from any leg exercises at (no cross training etc.) for 6 weeks
^^ after both of the breaks I felt the same within a minute of running again
*******MRI without dye to right side: shows labral tear, partial thickness tear at hamstring origin (had this imaging done first, no dye as doc didn’t think labral tear was cause of symptoms)
MRI right side WITH dye: showed labral tear *******
^^ doc said tears were not “obvious”- could be my “normal”
** X-ray of hips was said to be mostly normal though hip alignment was possibly abnormal (doc again said what was seen could just be my normal)
-Cortisone shot to hip joint
-Cortisone shot to hamstring origin (left side)
Cortisone Shot Experience hip:
--Initially felt “numbing,” and helped alleviate symptoms for first 5-7 days
--Symptoms have slowly started coming back over the next 2 weeks
-Currently, symptoms are nearly just as bad as before the shots.
- I was told that Even though I experience some relief, it doesn’t point to the labral tear causing the symptoms necessarily. I was told that I would’ve needed to go on a run or do the things that cause the majority of symptoms within the first couple hours when the lidocaine hadn’t worn off yet. I was told by doc that the things we need to feel “like a miracle had happened.” Since I didn’t go on a run or test it out (thanks to radiologist/initial ortho doc who forgot to tell me to do this...) I am getting a lidocaine injection to test it out this week. If it feels like a miracle then doc says labral tear; if not, NO IDEA
Does anyone have experience with these symptoms or if they could be related to a labral tear or something else? I don’t have the typical groin or hip
Flexor pain.... I’m so confused . Please share anything, I’m so frustrated :(
