Hi, I could use some advice and guidance on what do from here.
A little background: I have never really ventured into "high" mileage. I'm not really running high mileage now, but it's more than I have ever done previously. Last marathon training cycle I maxed out at 43 miles in a week (which is crazy for me to think about). I was hanging in the 50-55 mpw range as of recently and the past three weeks have done 57, 59, and 64 miles respectively.
About a week ago I felt pain in the ball of my left foot. It started on my long run on Saturday, October 5, but I powered through to get 19 in. It hurt a decent amount throughout the week, but I used inserts to alleviate the pounding on the ball of my foot and it felt better towards the end of the week.
I kept the inserts in all week and felt great this past Saturday when I got in 20 miles. I did 4 light on Sunday and 8 on Monday with no issues. Today (Tuesday) I decided I would test out no inserts for my 11-mile run. I felt Achilles pain at mile 3ish, but kept going. I decided I was only going to do 9, but I now know I should have stopped sooner.
Right now it feels really tender. I read online that for a lot of people the Achilles hurts at the beginning of a run and then loosens up. Mine progressively got worse throughout the run and it now still hurts when I walk on it.
1.) Do you think the metatarsal and Achilles injuries are related? They are both on my left foot and it's hard to believe they aren't related when one happened right after the other. I was thinking the inserts maybe messed up my Achilles, but who knows.
2.) I obviously don't want to take off because I'm in the best shape of my life, but I also know running on it will only make it worse, so I know rest is probably needed (and I want to run in 5 weeks). Any advice on how to recover / train from here?
Thanks in advance for any help!
