I have been a runner for 10+ years with no history of injuries until about 2 years ago when in the middle of a race my left leg lost power and function, forcing me to pull over to the side (went numb and muscles tightened up). The symptoms went away after a few minutes of walking and I was able to finish the race. Fast forward a couple weeks and problem continued to get worse to the point that I could only run 1 mile before I would lose function and have to walk. I have been to numerous doctors and the common opinion is that I have a nerve compressed at L5S1 that shuts off function to my leg when inflammation increases from the pounding. With PT exercises, core strengthening, chiropractic care, and ART, I have been able to resume marathon training and am able to go longer stretches before my leg goes out (usually 3-4 miles). However, any speed work or hills immediately fires it up and long runs usually require several breaks. I am able to remedy the symptoms by walking or side shuffling and then can continue running. When I am not running, my lower back aches and the muscles in my leg feel tight. I also have tingling down my leg and an ache in the ball of my foot. While I am grateful that I can "run thru" this issue, I am emotionally drained from constantly fighting with my body and I am losing hope that I will ever be able to run at the level I know I am capable of. Has anyone had any luck successfully treating nerve compression? I have been to 5 orthopedics with several telling me I should "retire" from running. Any advice would be appreciated!
