Seeing I am on the real life kick at the moment and noting Nobby's comment about getting a runner to do another Time trial reminds me of another situation involving a guy called Fred Smith. Fred was an excellent Road runner and in 1969 placed 2nd behind Jeff Julian when Jeff won the NZ 10 mile Road champs in 47:45. Fred ran 48:10. He also ran for the same club at that time as Jeff : Owairaka.
From the late 60's through the mid 80's Fred was one of NZ's "Hard men" on the Road.
I became friendly with Fred around 1969 and got to discuss training with him over a few beers on many occasions over the years.
Fred was caoched by Arthur at that time and he ran pretty much a schedule as has been outlined here many times.
The old story of "how much, how quick" always arose when it came to faster work as Fred did not have good basic speed.
I don't think I would insult him by saying he would struggle to break 29 secs for 200m.
Fred said the hardest workouts he did with Arthur was the 2 miles of 50 yd dashes.
He said he ran one session of these on his own and duly reported to Arthur. Arthur then said he would look at the next session.
Fred set off as he thought he should and immediately was yelled at by Arthur "You run the 50 yards between the sprints not Jog (Fred thought he was running !!!!!)".
He noted that Arthur never "shut up" the whole time, yelling, encouraging and occasionally abusing him (for not running hard enough !!). He finished the workout literally on his knees and said he had never been so tired after a workout in his life.
Arthur then said "Good stuff, Thats how you run them !".
From that point on in his career Fred felt he was ready for anything. He said Arthur taught him about Pain and no workout ever phased him for the rest of his career.
I have not seen Fred for quite some years but have never forgotten some of the antics he got up to as he was also a very funny guy.
