There are opportunities to buy & sell if it is really important to you. You most likely only think it is important to trade immediately. There are after hours trading opportunities. If you had a net worth of greater than 100 million USD, you would possibly find it worth the effort to have accounts in banks in Tokyo and somewhere in Europe. If you had accounts in Asia and Europe, you would avoid bank holidays. Mutual funds keep very little cash on hand. Mutual funds rely on relatively equal cash flows. Mutual funds usually only keep about 2% cash on hand. Mutual funds and investment banks maintain lines of credit with brick & mortar banks. No U.S. financial markets when the banks are closed. Bank holidays were meant to temporarily slow down the speed of money.
Stock market is 24/7, just different bourses, 144 of them. But you knew that.

Have you seen how crowded that place is? If they never closed, they'd never be able to sweep the floor. At some point, basic hygiene has to take precedence over commerce.
There is after hours trading, but there isn’t high liquidity after hours so there can be wide variation in prices unrelated to normal trading hours valuations.
It gives them time to rig it for the rich basstud insiders.
I thought my post was end of thread. I neglected to state, rule 144 trading cannot occur on an after hours trading desk. The insider whales trade a bit after the markets close. Other large trades are negotiated and often traded gradually throughout the course of normal trading day.
