I don't understand why American marathoners or American distance runners in general are not competitive for wins at the international level. We have basically been irrelevant for decades.
We have one of the deepest pools of talent (right? see below) and surely have the most/best resources.
We are more competitive in other shorter track events (mostly in sprints but I would also argue we've had more success at 1500m and 800m than at 5k/10k/marathon) and are more competitive in other endurance sports, e.g. cycling, swimming, triathlon, Americans are pretty competitive in those sports.
What is the explanation?
(A) PEDs?
(B) Training/coaching?
(C) Our best endurance athletes do other sports?
(D) Our talent pool actually sucks?

Kenyans and Ethiopians have a much bigger and better talent pool in running. Due to genetics, body shape, they have a larger talent pool and these kids are getting picked and trained in this sport almost exclusively, meaning that all the most talented of the already talented get noticed.
A truely worldclass talent can come from everywhere in the world, but the odss are stacked in favour of the East african be genetic and natural selection. They have way more chance to produce world class runners.
Our talent pool is too big physically for marathon. Small people of European ancestry are not the cream of the crop as far as athleticism goes.
Over monetized and commoditized. These runners can't wait to make themselves commercial items. Running is a distraction from that. Probably starts with just hoping to get a scholarship. It's just a different game when you are from a rich country.
