When Bannister ran sub-4 that was seen at the time as the equivalent of conquering Everest. It seized public imagination and was universally acclaimed. Kipchoge's sub-2 is only sports news - and is already last week's. It also carries an asterisk, for a whole variety of reasons. Pretty soon it will just be another sports statistic, of interest only to running nuts.
Bannister, doesn't measure up to Kipchoge. To break an even number barrier, Bannister needed to be paced to a sub-4 mile and Kipchoge needed to be paced to a sub-2 Marathon. Bannister was not good enough to earn an Olympic medal. You do know that Bannister was no better the 4th in 1956 Olympics, 1500m.
