With a few exceptions US male marathoners don’t even belong in this conversation. The times have stagnated and the majority of them have given up on taking the risk to compete with the best and risk blowing up, and instead have settled on being content with just competing against the other Americans. If all of those sub 2:12 guys had gone for a sub 2:10 or quicker time today, most would’ve blown up, but it’s hard to believe that at least one or two wouldn’t have been able to hang on.
