The fundamental problem in healthcare is that the government wields almost unlimited power over whom we can purchase medical services from and what tools those people can use. Most people have a religious-like faith in the ability of government to know what’s best for them, when in reality, no one in government cares what’s good for them, and today’s regulations are nothing more than the inevitable result of pressure group warfare in a mixed economy. Established doctors lobbied for state licensing to keep anyone with different training off their turf, even though there is no proof or reason to think that their training is ideal. Large drug companies lobbied for FDA regulators so stringent that it takes lifetimes and vast fortunes to get drugs approved, creating a world where only the biggest, richest, and most well-connected people can get drugs approved. All of which has resulted is in ridiculous prices for things that should be obsolete. What we need is not a move for socialism, but radical free market reform. Grant people the moral right to make their own decisions, even if some of them choose poorly and die as a result. While a small number of people will do dumb things, most will do smart things. One person’s freedom to make a good decision should not be sacrificed to protect another person from the consequences of his mistakes. Every individual should be responsible for himself. Grant that principle, and people will solve their healthcare problems on their own, thorough voluntary trade.
