Since Bekele was just 2 sec away from his WR. So in controlled conditions like today can Bekele run around 1:59:50?

Should be 1:59:42.2

They can both run close to 2:00:00 (maybe under) in a head-to-head race in Berlin provided they go for a fast time from the gun.
No Bekele won’t be able to break 2, since he didn’t run a 2:00:25 marathon beforehand.
........and more so, here is the deal with Bekele.
With him, you don't know what you have or what you are up to.
Before his remarkable 2:01.42 in Berlin, he had dropped out of perhaps 3 out of his 5 previous marathons.....if my maths is right.
Bekele will run very well up to the 30k mark and then stop!
With Kipchoge, you know that he will finish the race.
In Tokyo, since both will most likely be there, it will be hard to root against Kipchoge.
The man will most likely finish the race and he never disappoints!
Kipchoge has run 13 marathons.
He has lost 2 (or failed to win)!
Both have been world record races..............sort of.

What 2 did he lose? He only lost to Wilson Kipsang, and it took a world record to beat Kipchoge.

Bekele has been thinking about retiring for years. That is one of the reasons why he has been so inconsistent. Now that he knows he can possibly run as fast as Kipchoge, he is back in the game.

You should look up Bekele's track record in world/olympic level races. And look up his record against kipchoge
Bekele has done it all in running--including track WR's and Olympic gold medals--probably more world cross country titles than anyone else. Except for his younger years, Kipchoge is largely a marathon specialist. BTW, Samuel Wanjuru could probably be right up there were it not for the tragic accident. I still rank the Olympic Beijing marathon performance as one of the greatest ever when you adjust for conditions etc.
Bekele 0-4 lifetime against Kipchoge. He likely has more physical talent than Kipchoge but he is so undisciplined and inconsistent as a result don't see him ever doing it. Now that the 2-hour mark has been broken, don't see any sponsor putting up the money for a Bekele attempt. Breaking 1:59 just doesn't have the same ring.
Even if Bekele gets selected for the Olympic team, don't see him beating Kipchoge. He's never run 2 good marathons in a row, nor has he ever run a summer marathon. Remember, Bekele once dropped out of a World Cross race because of heat.

0-4 when Bekele was losing to anyone else and not finishing marathons. He wasn't at this best and was losing to toher people, so it's not about Kipchoge.
On the track and on cross, he made Kipchoge looks like average during all these year. Kipchoge moved to Marathon earlier because he couldn't deal with Bekele and the other on tracks.
Bekele in Berlin form is at Kipchoge level in marathon race, probably even better.

Kipchoge dropped out of a World Cross race because Bekele DROPPED THE HAMMER on him.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oH8q-JabSKEYes OP Bekele could also run sub 2 in controlled conditions. He obviously has the talent to do so.Could just as easily drop out .You just don't know with him
Kenny B would definitely break 2 at least in one of those staged exhibitions....let's see them go head-to-head at least once next year when both are in form!
ya bekele could always run sub 2.
that is what his track times and cross country imply.
only now, are people doing the math.
at 80 percent he ran 203 for gods sake.
but it is a long shot.
he'll need perfect conditions and no injuries and some pacing last time would have gotten him at least 400 m faster.
that is real close.
whatever, you can't say that the 2 hour debate is real now.

those guys were flying, that's really not distance running, that is blasting all the way.
that is the way to do it.
