All,
Have appreciated the many number of thoughtful posts about college recruitment. My son is a promising high school middle distance/distance runner, not national caliber but one of top prospects (top 5) in a larger state (top 20 population). He is junior in cross country season. Some limited D1 outreach has started (from schools) but based on everything we read his plan was to wait till after spring track season to start contacting higher interest schools so he has some times to post. He has done ACT already with high score and his grades are very good. We are financially capable, not looking for money, realistic about his place in the pecking order, he just wants to continue running because he loves it and wants to do it at larger college (what he wants in a school).
We have noticed many kids are committing in late September and early October to some of his schools of interest, presumably just off spring track and early season cc performance. Is May/June too late to initiate contact? Seems like very compressed process. On the other hand, I can't see what there is to talk about just yet until they do see his spring track season. His sophomore times were good, but he needs to progress in junior year to qualify for most programs of interest.
Don't want to miss the boat but don't want to irritate a coach either.
Advice?
