Unfortunately, the victim is sometimes the accused.
Accusations are sometimes incorrect. They may be leveled by well-meaning but mistaken or misinformed persons, but other times quite intentionally exaggerated or invented out of malice or for personal gain.
There is a tendency to believe the accused "guilty until proven innocent".
Guilty or not, the outcome is often the same.
Even if an accused is fully or substantially exonerated, which can be a lengthy, costly, and tolling process, that stain never washes off.
For some, they see divorce, friends distance and disappear, opportunities lost, reputation ruined, employment ended, bank accounts drained -- lives in every sense upended, while the false accuser usually walks away consequence-free.
