I acknowledge your enthusiasm but I don't think people will respect you more for running at a D1 school. Is that your main motivator for trying to run in D1? Believe me, distance runners are not the type of people others look up to in admiration. Even at a D1 school the football and basketball kids are the ones people look up to.
Just a little wisdom here: do it because you want to do it, not because of what you think others will think of you.
I mean, what do you want? Run in college because you want to become a better runner? If so, you could become better at D1, D2, D3, or even NAIA if you find a coach that works well for you.
If you think you can do well in D1 then go for it. But again, don't tell the coaches you contact that you want to run in D1 because "it seems cool and fun" and "its cool to be a d1 athlete", they'll think you are not taking it seriously.
