I've read Matt Futterman's book and I very much enjoyed it. The book deals with "running to the edge" as something Larsen began doing back in the 50s and 60s when most track coaches were still having athletes race intervals nearly every day. From what I gather running to the edge is essentially running near tempo pace or close to out on the roads or trails. Intervals would not be added until close to racing season.
Anyway, does anyone know the actual training of the Jamul Toads back when they won the National Cross Country? Were they doing progressions near tempo everyday? some of the days? Essentially I'm wondering about specifics.
